I am interested in how much initial timing people run in their motor, as i'm having overheating problems.
My engine is 440 11-1 comp, crane roller 670/670 lift, .280@50 108, Dart 3050 without driver, 4500 j converter, 4.56 gears 29.5 slicks.

18-22 gets the job done in most cases.

Do you think my setup needs 22, or would you recommend i lock it out. Just worried about starter breakage.

You could be just lean, hows the idle... if your at
18 your in the ball park... I would check for a vac
leak or just lean

It doesn;t idle well at all, carb is hp 950 82 prim, 84 secs and i think 6.5 pvs back and front.
What are the symptoms of a vac leak.

Take a can of spray carb cleaner/brake cleaner and spray
around the intake to heads and around the carb base,
if its leaking it will increase in rpm.... thats the
easiest way to check. Do your plugs look whiter
on one bank than the other, that would likely be
a intake gasket a carb base gasket would show lean
on all of them

with a cam that big you're vacuum at idle must be low. Prob 6-8. You need a lower power valve to start. 2.5-4.5
