Been looking into possibly building a p7 motor in the future and got a couple questions. Does the r5 block have a standard mopar bolt pattern? I was wanting to stick with a auto would this be possible? I've found alot of parts for these things very cheap both local and on the net. Why is all the stuff so cheap? Are they that hard to build/maintain?

The R5 block/P7 headed engines were LAST YEARS Nascar Mopar engine. Since last year, a lot of Mopar teams have disappeared-----and, the R6/P8 engine has been introduced----thus rendering the R5/P7 obsolete. And in the real racing world, if something is obsolete----its value is very low. So we are flooded with these parts.

BTW, the same thing is happening with the GM SB2 engines and parts. And the same thing will happen with Ford engines next year as the new Ford engine is introduced into Nascar.

The R5/P7 engine is a design specific race engine. No parts interchange with existing Mopar engines. They use very large bores, very short strokes, and need to turn very high RPMs to work---at all. And, are dry sump oiled ONLY!

So its expensive to add cubic inches, expensive to rebuild with new parts----and a lot of the "parts" for sale doesn't necessarily interchange with other race parts.

The bell housing is different and the crank flanges are all GM.

YOu can use a wet sump with an external pump. Its cheaper to buy an R5 P7 for 850 hp that you can street drive than anything out there.

Some have the ford rear flange also, better rear main seal.

Yes, can be external wet sump, but you have to deal with the cam tunnel.

Looking at both engines, I don't consider the R5/P7 obsolete, the only big advantage I see in the R6/P8 is the high skirt block design.

There will be even more R5/P7, and some R6/P8 stuff out there soon, Evernham/Petty, or whatever they are calling it this week, are going Toyota next year.

Im not sure about that, if you shop around and get the right parts the first time.

The only used parts I have in my build are one time run heads on the dyno, new block/crank/pistons/rockers/camshaft/msd dual pickup...and thats including the Rick L adapter plate and im right at 6k so far and the only thing I dont think I have is plug wires.

This even includes a very nice set of headers that fit the alterktion front end.

Ive seen them listed complete with one race for 6-7k but who wants a one race motor???

The little parts do add up, but if your patient and watch the bag or know a nascar guy, your in there.

Ive mixed thoughts on the lil piston oilers, im using them though......has anyone found a way around it without causing O/P issues .

I think the pin oilers are the same as a honda b series engines, just plug them off you dont need them, your rods (if they are the nascrap carillo's)should have pressurized oiling to the pins anyway.

i have two complete engines three spare blocks 2 sets of different style port heads and 6 sets of untouched heads, the only thing i do not have is distributors, i have less than 12,000.00 invested.

Is that why they don't have their R6/P8 stuff off the ground?!

where else can you get an adapter, rick is the only place I have seen, also where can I get headers for this? has anyone hooked one of these up to a 727? if so what starter and flexplate did you use?

The Liuzzo Bros Racing site was working last time I checked. You could phone Rick on (570) 561 1746 or email or PM him through the board. I drew up a Torqueflite adapter for Rick so he should be able to make you one. Let me know how you make out.
