I recently bought a 68 road runner and when I got it home i found the broadcast sheet (or roughly 1/2 of it) in the back seat. It got me thinking of the history of this car and so I made some phone calls and got in touch with a previous owner. Talking with him I might be able to get the original tranny for my car, he has to got through his parts. As far as the engine and the rear axle those went to lubbock texas in a "hemi" GTX, he kept the hemi and rear and my originals went into that car. My question is mostly on the rear axle, are there stampings on it you could verify the car they came in? Also on the tranny it's an automatic torqueflite tranny where would I find the numbers and what numbers will i be matching? thanks for your help

Josh

No markings on the axle to link it to your car. Just the engine and trans.

Earning every penny of that moderator paycheck.

Why bother with it? With out ALL the original parts its not going to be worth a total matching numbers car. Even with 'date' matchibg parts its not going to be worth a numbers matching car unless you do something real special to it...

I am truckless..

The transmission will have the part number on the driver's side of the pan rail ...
part number will be - PK2801541L abcd efgh
----- (where "abcd" is a 10,000 day date code - around 2488 for your car) & (efgh is the production unit number)

The last 8 digits of the VIN# will be stamped about center top of the bellhousing 8G266xxx

If you have to locate parts, why not locate the correct parts? IMHO any useable original numbered part, reunited with the car, enhances the overall quality/value/desirability of the car.

Josh, did you get your email?

Yes I did and thanks I really appreciated the time spent on my behalf.

As far as the parts go I find it sort of fun as well as I'm helping build the value of my car and finding out about its heritage. It seems that it was rather easy getting ahold of this owner and if I could just get a vin of that gtx i will keep searching for that motor. I've been lucky so far so you never know that motor may just be out there!!

sounds like a good idea. Even if you don't get all the original stuff, half the fun is trying.
Love to see pics of your runner
(check out 69 road runner.net,we like '68s too!)

Is there a way to get a vin number off a car that you have a previous owner's name?

One other thing if I wanted to make sure that this tranny was for my car I could just match the partial vin on the top center of the tranny?

Maybe start with a plate number and a friend that is a police officer or in the DMV?
