Can anyone tell me if "67" Dart GT's with 383 engines used chrome exhaust tips like 68 and 69 Dart 340's or 383's.

Some people will say no, but the 5 67 GTS's I have had all had them. Of course, if it was ordered for California then no for sure!


The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

67 Dart and Barracuda "H" code 383 cars were not
equipped with chrome extensions but instead with 2" turndown style tailpipes. The right tailpipe is different on the 67 cars than the 68-69 cars as the tailpipe had to clear the transverse gas tank strap J-bolt- so to install aftermarket exhaust tips some custom bending/fitment is required.

That is what I thought too until I ran across an original owner who said he had chrome tips on his car. I have since judged the car and it does retain it's original exhaust! I owned a 67 Dart GTS that was converted into a drag car right out of the dealership who sold it and had a straight front axle installed. WHen I restored it the original tip hangers were still on the car!

Most have learned to never say never with Mopars.
With this being the case maybe someone had tips installed on the 67 after the tips were available for the 68 GTS model year. 67 frame rails had the same hanger J-nut cut-outs to install tip hangers as the 68 rails did so it could have been done to look factory.
Arvin Industries were the main supplier for assembly line exhaust parts for Chrysler for this model year and there is no data in our Arvin cataloging that supports that tips were ever offered by them at least for installation on the assembly line. The reverse lamps mounted in the bumper above the exhaust exits may have been a factor for not installing tips but who really knows. It would be interesting to actually see one that has tips that is claimed to be original. Maybe there will be one at Carlisle we could look at.
Also there is no documentation that we have that 68-69 340-383 GTS Darts or 68-69 340-383 Barracudas were available without exhaust tips even if delivered in California. "B" bodies came both ways and California was generally turndown style tailpipes but there were a few that slipped through with exhaust tips for some reason. At the time I was licensed in California through the CHP division (prior to CARB) to inspect and sign off exhaust certifications and personally saw new "B" body cars with exhaust tips. Never saw any 68-69 new factory GTS cars without the exhaust tips as they were legal in the state's certification rules.

Just can't pass on this one. My 67 Dart GTS DID NOT have chrome tips. They were turnded down as in this photo. Pipes in photo are replacements.
However I have the orginal pipes. NO Chrome.

While none of us will never say never with Chrysler I must admit that I have never owned an original untouched 67 GTS and have only talked with a couple original owners such as Maynard. The 7 67 GTS's that I have owned were beat hard and put away wet and I am sure that the replacement exhaust that was put on the restored cars that I had were what was available when they were restored which were probably made for later 383 Darts. I have no idea if the tip hangers were put on later or not, but I will look at the convertible that was pulled out of a New York junkyard and see what is under it, who knows?
