I have the adjuster all the way in on passenger side with correct end play on that axle but the opposite axle has way to much end play. Axles are all the way in. It's a 742 case that I just put in. I pulled a 489 out and there was no problem with end play on that one.

Sounds like the buttons in the third member are missing. Pull the axels and look with a flashlight to see them. Is one is missing, guess who has to pull the third memeber?

Does it have a clutch type Sure-Grip? If so it's possible (probable) that the thrust buttons are missing.

When you say thrust buttons, What do thay look like? It is a clutch type unit. The 489 I just pulled is the cone type. I hope I don't have to pull it.

Like this: Pull out one axle and look into the end with a flash light and you ahould see the big end of one of these. If they are not there you will see about a 1/2 inch hole.

Well I found out thier not in there. Isn't there a pin supposed to be between them? And what keeps them from going side to side? Thanks

All the roll pin does is to keep them from falling out during assemble. I use a glob of good gun grease to hold them in place.
They are meant to slide back and forth in the case. The small barrel of the space that fits through the hole in the case on each side is longer than the case is so that the adjustment of the end play of both axles is done on one side.
