Looking for the correct finish for these two pieces that fit up in the LCA. I have them clear zinced right now, but they look rather bright. Dave Wise's bolt book just says "zinc" finish, and looking at some older OE cars I'm not sure that's correct.

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

The ones on both of my 71 cars were black zink or black phosphate with no trace of silver zink. I have the book by Dave Wise and it says silver zink. The last 2 I pulled from a junkyard were also black phosphate .

Could you post a pic of what you are referring to? Is this it?

I open to any information discovered and will make any adjustments to keep the fastener manuals as accurate as possible. According to the Chrysler Engineering Standards galvanized was never used on any fasteners.

According to the Chrysler Engineering Standards Manual Dated June 1974 and Oct 1978 the adjuster finish was referred to as PS-79C15 which is Zinc.

Thanks Dave,

Does that color below correspond to clear/silver zinc or something different, i.e. black, yellow, brown, etc.

Thanks,

Eric

This is an aftermarket piece that has he screw plated yellow zinc dichromate and the swivel plated gray phosphate. The factory originals were silver zinc according to the Eng Stds and many original pieces that we ispected that were not rusted to death that were found in the dry mid west and Southern Calf. Over the past 20 years we have found 4 length of original screws to confuse the issue even further. One thing you can count on with Chrysler and that is variation. We will be watching for updates.

Keep in mind that these parts were frequently replaced when a vheicle had front end alignments performed back in the day.

I have seen many original examples where the block is silver zinc and the bolt black zinc.

I'd say clear zinc or black phosphate is correct.
I've personally seen both used.
I don't think they were an all that commonly replaced part.

I found a pair of NOS ones years ago,yes the fine threaded ones not the later course threaded version, both still in the boxes and the block was natural metal and the "H" marked bolt was gold zinc. Not saying these were "assembly line" parts but were NOS.

From what I have observed, the adjuster plate is natural metal or maybe black phospate. I have never pulled one yet that appeared clear zinc. On the bolt I would tend to say clear zinc was the more common. I have never seen a yellow zinc one yet that was factory installed.
As a related item... the spacer plates under the control arm bumper appear to have just been natural metal.
