I have picked up my friend's 440 short-block that was removed from a REAL V-Code 1970 Cuda. He was told the engine was replaced long ago with a "replacement" engine. It has no VIN number on the lower pad on the right side. On the upper "Pad" is the following markings:
G 440 (Maltese Cross)-(Big "X") -H P
10 - 16 HP2
The numbers on side of the block(passenger) are:
7 - 28 -69
2536430 - 7
My question is: Could this be a "Warranty" replacement block that was cast in late 1969 ? I know that "G" is for 1971 , 440 is the cubic inch. I believe that the Maltese Cross & the big "X" are for undersize Main & Rod bearings , however I'm not sure why the "HP" on top row and "HP2" on bottom? Also what is the "10-16" represent? I hope these are not stupid questions and I sincerely appreciate our knowledgeable forums' members responding when time permits! I hope everyone is having a GREAT Memorial week-end Stuck at home in broke California! ...............

It probably is a warranty engine because it has no vin stamped. The 10 16 means it was assembled on Oct the 16 of the previous year of the year model engine. In this case a 71 HP motor it was assembled on Oct 16, 1970.

I hate to go against the tide and burst bubbles but Chrysler DID build and SELL OVER THE COUNTER both bare blocks and service replacement shortblocks , though that particular block would have been neither a service replacement or a bare block stamped the way it is and WARRANTY replacements wouldn't be stamped like that either unless it was done by the guy installing the engine .

Did you find a tag riveted to the side of this block ? Remember that the VIN was stamped by a line worker , what does the VIN pad look like ???

You are not about to burst my bubble. There is no difference between a warrantee engine and a over the counter engine. It would be stamped just like his is to id the fact that it is a 72 engine with 72 internal parts. I would think it was sold as a complete engine. Those tags usually don't last long. My AAR had a tag stating that it was factory built short engine. I bought a 77 400 and a 440 short block but do not remember what was stamped on them. I will have to look the next time at the shop. A short block should not have all the complete stampings that a complete engine sold over the counter.

I sincerely appreciate everyones response!
The VIN pad looks like original machining , just no numbers/letters. It was in my friend's 1970 Cuda when he bought the car 6 or 7 years ago. It ran fine , He had located an "F" 1970 440 block and had rebuilt to sixpack specs. The "G" motor I'm discussing has what appears as all Sixpack internals IE: Rods, notched pistons. It did have an aftermarket Engle 1-bolt camshaft in it. I have a 1970 "V"-code Challenger with a "J" 440 (1974 Block?) and was considering using this motor in my 1970"?" "F" 1970 440's are very pricey and the I would have to go completely through it to make it "correct". I guess I'm trying to ascertain that this is INDEED a 1971 Sixpack engine & what all those symbols represent. Do you think this is a good swap for my 1970 ? or........ Should I keep hunting for an "F" 1970 block? Thanks again to all responders!

Mark , that bubble burst comment wasn't directed at you ...

Without seeing the top pad and the VIN pad on this particular engine I still believe what he has is a line installed engine , or at least one that was slated to be installed on the line but maybe never made it ?? Though it was assembled early enough to have been installed on the line .

it would be interesting to see this one if it's still virgin .

no matter what you install in your car it will NEVER be the original engine unless you find the original engine . too bad it doesn't have the original cam , it could POTENTIALLY be an original 6pk shortblock , but it's been molested so who knows now .

Since your car is missing it's original engine and this has no VIN pad you could use it and say it's a warranty replacement
