On a non-od 4 speed what direction are the levers in neutral? I've read straight up, little forward, reverse lever forward etc...

Thanks

as far as i know there is only one way to align everything and that is to unhook the levers, put a pin, 1/8 inch i believe, through the alignment holes in the shifter and then adjust the levers.

Does the 1-2 lever on the trans move correctly when the 1-2 shift rod is not connected?

If the slider and gear teeth are lined up perfectly in the case then all the tugging in the world won't let you shift. This is not as uncommon as it may sound. Before you go to a whole lot of trouble, turn the input shaft by hand as you try to shift. Keep in mind that under normal operating conditions all the internals in the trans are turning.

it's somewhat common for an 833 to get locked in two gears at once, it sounds like that has happened with yout trans

you may have to take the side cover off.

There are different levers for the sides and they can be put on backwards. I don't rely on the looks.

The best way is to rotate the reverse lever (rearmost lever) counter clockwise until it clicks. This is neutral for the reverse lever. If it won't rotate then rotate the middle lever back and forth until you find the middle position. The middle position is netral for that lever. Repeat and find the middle position for the front lever.

When the front and middle lever are moved to the center position and the rear lever is counter clockwise it is in neutral.

If it won't position it could be broken shift fork or interlock lever on the side cover. If the side cover has a large bolt or round spot between the front two levers it is the interlock style side cover. If it is smooth between the levers like the pic John posted it is the old Ball&Detent style which is not as smooth shifting but much more buttet proof in my opinion because there are no interlock levers to break. And they do pretty often.

Got reverse all the way CCW. 1-2 has 3 clicks, slight CCW, slight CW and large click CW. 3-4 is in the upright position. Its the smooth case.

You should feel a definate 3 different positions for the 1/2 & 3/4 shift levers, and two positions for the reverse. The hard or soft clunk is not uncommon. It depends on the position of the syncronizers inside the tranny as to how it will feel. When the transmission is rotating as you drive down teh road it will be fine.

First I would make sure you can get neutral.

If the transmission is in the car put the rear on jack stands, remove the rods from the side of the tranny, and with the engine OFF place the levers in neutral and try to spin the drive shaft by hand. If it spins, use the side levers to place it in each gear and see if each gear stops the driveshaft from turning. If that works then the tranny is probably OK. If not pop the side cover and check for a broken shift fork. Very common.

Next line up neutral with the side levers and with the shifter in the neutral position align the shift rods to slip in and out of the holes on the levers. Try to shift it inside the car.

If it won't shift it could be a gummed up or worn out shifter. Seriously worn out shift rods or the very common shafts or levers are worn where the levers bolt to the transmission.

Also I have had to bend shift rods to make them fit after being abused for untold number of miles.

I had a friend get in my car and try to shift through the gears while parked. I don't know what he did, but the shifter got stuck and I think it was in two gears like someone said above. I was a little bugged out.

no amount of fiddling with the shifter fixed it I had to go underneath and push the levers back to neutral. I still don't know what he did or how!

Well it appears I got it right with your help. Thanks! There was a bushing on the shifter that should be on a rod instead. Its kinda clunky but hopefully its good with the car running.
