Well it seems my carb likes 25* initial but my car doesn't like to start when hot with that much timing. A while back someone mentioned you could wire in a toggle switch so that you could get the system cranking and then flip a switch to activate the ignition to start the car. Would anyone have a link to a tech article or another thread that gives a little more detail into doing this....or just give me a quick how-to?

Here's a simple diagram but you should be able to
figure out what you need

Thanks Mr. P Body. So the "start switch" in the diagram would be my keyed ignition switch and the "ignition switch" would be the toggle switch....right?

Also, are there any specs I need to meet when it comes to the toggle or the power bar?

If you are currently running through your keyed ignition, then you simply need to find a way to energize your starter relay to get the starter turning ( you can wire a simple rocker switch for this bye using the ?yellow wire? from ignition switch and a postive battery feed to the other side) activate the rocker switch to roll starter then turn key to on position.

You can do what Lonnie suggest here, trace the wire
back from the starter solenoid and split that wire
and mount both ends to a momentary switch... that
will give you cranking then use your key for ignition
EDIT
I'm incorrect, you would need to have the key to the
ON position but that would give you ignition also,
so you need to run a hot lead to one side of the switch
then to the solenoid(hot from a always hot source, maybe battery)

Seems to me it'd be easier to do this the "other way around"

If you are running a stock ign switch, it already kills ign1 in crank, so if you use the key to crank the engine, just find (you can buy them) a normally CLOSED button/ toggle and break the lead to the ign bypass (ign2) So now just hold down the button/// toggle, and twist the key, then let up on the button.

440sixpack...I like your thinking. Looking at the wire diagram IGNITION 2 is Brown. That should be easy enough to track down and install a normally closed switch in.

By the way....how many amps would the switch need to be rated for?

Thats the way I would do it....makes a good ignition kill too.

It won't kill the ignition --it's in the crank (ign2) lead. I don't think you need much of a switch, the common 10-15A household rated switch. It's been awhile, but someone like Mouser Electronics should have them. Maybe even your average city electric supply house. Last I knew, Mouser had no min. order

I found a push button switch at Mouser (normally closed) and it is rated for 15A @ 125VAC and 10A @ 250VAC. Will this work or do I need to find a switch rated for 12V service? The switch is a Carling #170 (Mouser part# 691-170).

I just thought the toggle would be something to bump. With the push button spec'd at Mouser it is a normally closed and you have to hold it to open the contacts. So I figured I would just push and hold the button, turn the ignition key to get the starter cranking, and then release the button to fire it off. That way, if I'm not holding it the circuit is closed.

Do you think the one I located will work or do I need to look for something rated for 12volt?

If using a key switch on a street car using a normally closed momentary pushbutton (push to break, spring return) actually would work very well.

For cold starts you would probably never need it but on a hat start push it in for a second or 2 while you turn the key just to get the starter turning the motor over. A flush or recessed pushbotton head would prevent it from inadvertent accidents and you would simply turn the key to off as normal.

That Mouser switch should work fine. Another source, if you're not fussy about appearance, would be common brake light switches. I can't place any good "numbers" right now, but a NAPA pictorial section of the catalogue should work. Some of them were threaded stems, had a plunger just like a push button
