Well, I suppose 24k for a new crate means a dealer throwing out a $36k number for a new installed engine is believable, but likely on the high side. I had no idea a relatively common work truck motor could run that high. Seems insane to me. I would think a used engine installed by a private mechanic might be more like 12-15k, but no warrantee. A rock and a hard place. Guys pay a premium for the long term durability of diesels, when one craps out at 40,000 miles all that goes out the window. This jogged a memory cell or two for me, lol. Last oil change on the company truck the oil place wanted to replace the air filter, which I agreed with. 50k miles in the 12 months since I got it, new. A lot of it out in the oil patch on dirt. Lease company said "no, not due for replacement for 36 more MONTHS". At that rate I will have 200k miles on the truck before they will sign off on a new air filter. Really? As I told the shop, an air filter is cheaper than an engine.

Here’s a real question. What would it cost to just swap in a 5.7 or 6.4? Less than $36,000 probably. Junkyard fuel system and stand alone computer. Unless you have to pass a smog inspection. Kevin

I have seen new OEM crate engines advertised privately here for around $11k. No idea if they were a scam or not but low mile used were that much too. Kevin If the OEM motor puked at 40,000, what are the chances the next "low mileage" replacement is going to fair any better? It sounds like these motors are not surviving well in the real world. Imagine what its going to be like finding a good one of these motors in another 10 years.

Probably replaced by the next "brainiac" idea to save fuel.

Many states do an underhood inspection and an under vehicle inspection. Weather or not the inspections know anything is a grab bag.
I have a 1st gen Cummins. For 36 K, I could restore the truck AND build one heck of an engine.

How would they know what motor is in the truck, or care? Here in Ohio E-Check plugs into the OBD and runs the diagnostic through it. VIN (and OBD) verifies the engine and the emission output and issues, can't fool it.

MOST STATES emission zone inspections do this. the test reads 10 test readiness monitors. you have to have 9 out of 10 in compliance. a LOT if not all test zones you can fail by having a NON 50 state approved tune in your car even if all 10 monitors transmit ok i know Wisconsin has this.

I traded my 2014 ecodiesel off in November. 63,000 miles. It did me good but after the last high pressure fuel pump recall with no real fix and the crank sensor tone wheel failure. (bring it in and we will program it to run off the cam sensor). Only offered me 17k trade in. Figured I was living on borrowed time so I took it.

Yep. I have a tune for my F150 5.0. It doesn't touch any emissions systems or monitors but I still put the stock tune back in at emissions test time
