I have ATI, Coan, PTC, Midwest, and TCI. The only one I am not wild about is the TCI, but I bought it cheap and used, so there's that.
I had PTC repair the ATI, and service was great.
As Jay said, you're going to get lots of answers, all different.

Depends. No info on your combination or is it a race car with tags or a street car that goes to the track occasionally.
Coan is close to you. He does some really nice stuff.
Budget? A good race piece will be close to or over 4 figures. An old shelf 3500 10", not so much.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

There's a great local company right here in NEO. Perfect Converter AKA 501 Performance. Myself and many others in the area are using them and they are awesome to work with. Definitely worth calling them and talking about your needs. Talk to Bubba Rafferty or Logan Siegman. They are pretty big sponsors at Dragway 42 and work a lot with B3R racing and many other shops. Tell em Russ recommended you.

Whoever you choose spend the money and get the A500 style pump gears and use the A500 style converter snout. I have had problems with 904 converter snouts cracking or breaking even the "heavy duty" thicker ones. I have used the A500 style for 6 years no with no trouble.
I have had great luck with turbo action converters but I have never tried anywhere else. I used a Turbo Action 8" 4500 behind my 11:1 360 with edelbrock heads for street and strip use. I use that same converter now with my 418" motor but it flashes much higher behind the 418" motor.

I’m also a “fan” of the A500 pump gear….. both of my 904 trans are equipped with them…… and Lenny knew exactly what I was talking about and had the drive hubs in stock for building my converter. I assume the converter stub has to be changed for that? What’s the reason to change?

ATI. They are the only current company that uses all new components. That is not a true statement - most of the converter components today come from sonnex - several companies out there use new converter cores and all new components - However I believe ATI still has the new 8" cores. But most have moved away from the 8" and gone to the 9.5'-10" billet body which makes for a better converter

Yes that is the reason for the change, the snouts with the "flats" like the A500 pump gear uses do not crack in the slots (they don't have them) like the older snouts. Our experience is even the strongest chrome moly snouts will crack using the old style with the slots for the pump drive.

In Australia, we machine the pump to take a Borg Warner 35 pump bush, and run a stepped converter snout. No cracking
