I bought a used set of 572-13 heads, with valve covers etc. The port for the vacuum pump was already welded in the valve cover, and does not have a baffle. The fitting in the valve cover is right below the spraybar, and right over the #1 exhaust rocker. The vacuum pump was drawing the oil out of the air stream, before it got to the rocker/pushrod. Do you think a baffle below the fitting, or move the fitting to the front? I don't want anyone else to make the same mistake.

Hmm Not sure if the fitting position is the culprit here, our's has been there for 2 seasons no probs. There should be no "flow" through there once vacuum is achieved. Unless you got a gasket leaking. I'd check the spray bar holes, make sure they're not blocked. Check the rocker arm for cracks too, around the adjuster area. A buddy had one go after scorching a pushrod end. We figured it may have been the adjuster expanding with the heat.

I have to put on my spare pair of rockers, so I will check them. This is all we could come up with, and figured since this pair, mostly the exhaust were the only ones that didn't have oil dripping from the retainers, and were right under the fitting for the pump? I cleaned the tubes, and checked for oil when we primed it, and all was good. Maybe I'll open that hole up a little over this rocker? Thanks.

i take it you only have spray bar oiling nothing through the push rods?

That's correct, just the spray bar. The block isn't machined to oil through the lifters.

How much vacuum are you pulling? Should be no more than 12 in/hg BTW since it is said that the oil doesnt "aerate" enough with more on a wet sump, and wrist pins suffer (how wrist pin oiling changes with dry sumps I don't know ). Anyway, if you have a low reading you may have a leak, then you will have flow through the fitting and it will pull oil from that area. Do you have to empty oil from the breather? We get more water than oil through ours unless a gasket goes.

The tank does collect some oil, and I have the clear hose, and you can see oil in it. I'm still checking for leaks, and I think the valley pan inspection cover is my next target.

Here's a silly question..can the fitting for the Vacuum pump be installed else-where??? such as the valley plate?? or is there a specif reason fr the valve covers??? i watched my cosins the other day when he started his car and he too has the clear hose so i could see the oil being pulled from the valve cover into the recovery tank..not alot, but was visable...

Don't take my word for this, but, I remember reading on here that the valley plate drew too much oil? You want some oil to lubricate the pump.

The vac pump is moving air all the time(the rings arent
a perfect seal). At least try a baffle over the port
but thats not the best location for the port... try to
locate it over the end of your short hold down shaft
(where the stock shaft hold down would be... 2nd bolt
back from the front) and it WILL need a baffle

Thanks. I wish you could have "do overs" on some of this stuff?

Check the holes of the spray bar.

I'll recheck them, maybe it picked up something and is blocking that end hole?
