Working on a 71 cuda for a customer. Ordered up a 71-74 turn signal switch for the car. Got it and it has an additional wire that has a purple,brown and green with a black tracer wires in it along with the normal wide plug with the same color wires as the column had. The wide plug on the car was blue and the Year one is white. The plug from Year One is slightly bigger than the original one. When looking now that I have it out of the car I am wondering if it should have been one for a 70 e body. No idea on build date of the car. If we were to just swap the wide ends and install the wires back in place would it work? What is the additional plug with 3 wires in it for?

The extra plug is for cornering lights. Just usefully on full sized cars with this option. Not used on the rest.

MaMopar made the same maybe on 90s offering a single switch assembly as a a replacement for all bodies, simplifying the offer for parts stock.

By the colors you got an aftermarket replacement thought.

About the hazzard knob size, the only one available is the thick one, used on lates 71s production up to 76 Mopars. 70 and earliers 71s used the thin one which also meets the column collar for it which also changed along with the switch AND the key courtesy light, not just for E but also A and B bodies.

There was also another difference. Some got a push in switch and some others a pull out switch.

What are the options ?

-change the column collar (and courtesy light if optioned) for a late kind one.
-trim the knob
-trim the collar
-change the knob, which even I never have made it but I think is doable.

The thin knob kind is made of unobtanium

Yes, 1970 Ebody is unique, thin flasher button with arrow pointing OUT.

I repined the new one in the same order and used the original pig tail housing. Plugs in just fine but brake lights staying on. Checked power at the pig tail under the dash with it plugged into the turn signal switch. Brown, Tan, Pink and both greens have power with key on or off. With the turn signal switch unplugged from the harness the tan wire is the only wire that has power. Originally this car the passenger side tail light stayed on at times. Customer wanted a new harness on tail light so put that in. That did not fix that issue. Dug into the turn signal switch to find the cam set up was broken up. So in the process of putting a dakota digital dash in made the choice to put new switch in as well. Now faced with the brake lights staying on on both left and right. As far as the dakota dash set up. Only things installed right now are the speedometer wire plugged into transmission. Water and oil wire hooked up. Switched power on a fuse that is switched run and a constant power that is on the starter relay. All those wires are not plugged into anything dash related yet. Just working through the steps and got to the need to wire into the turn signal and high beam wires so figured I would get the new turn signal switch wired in and installed. The hazard button fit into the column nicely no issue and the whole unit screwed into place fine with no issues. Looking at the wire colors into the switch it all looks the same. Just have not pulled it back out to compare the back side by the turn cam area if those wires are all the same. Any ideas on why the brake lights are stuck on? I did unplug the brake switch and got nothing to change. Pushed in the plunger on the switch with no changes and pushed the brake pedal to move the plunger on the switch but no changes. I am stumped.

This is the new one from year one for a 71-4 and the one took out of the car. It sure looks like the same wire lay out as the 71-4 as there is one green wire that is different location. What year would you say the original one is? It did not have the extra wire for road lamps though like the 71-4 one from year one does.

If you were replacing the switch due the cancelling cam piece broken I was replaced just the canceling cam piece and preserving the rest. The canceling cam is available, and the original one gets the roller for the horn switch function, not the repro thought

Earliers 71s got the thin one too. I have seen those personally even in Venezuela assembled Chargers.

I’ve had trouble with those cheap repop switches. Some of the connections are so close they would touch each other and cause the lights to do funny things.
