Is it for real? Let's say If the tranny goes away in my 9 year old Grand Cherokee will they actually pay to have it fixed or will I end up still paying a huge deductible or some kind of prorate scam?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

They must promise the moon. I got a call about a month ago from a family member that wanted to get one from them. Asked me because I’m the car person in the family. My understanding of any warranty other than an oem is that they will collect the money for policies, then go bankrupt, claim you didn’t do proper maintenance, make you use only their “network” that you can get 8 to for a month, etc. or use crap parts. I’ve heard nothing good about these things from any company.

I recall well a friend getting a set of tires when he worked on the road. Took a Gemini warranty at point of sale. He was home and had a flat or something and the local place, with a permanent Gemini sign hanging prominently on the top of the building, telling him to get lost as it wasn’t covered.

I want my fair share

Most aftermarket warranty are garbage. You're better off just putting the money in a Mason jar.

Almost every auto repair shop I enter has a sign that says they do not deal directly with independent auto warranty companies. They say you are responsible for paying and you can fight with your warranty provider. A friend of mine who owns a very successful auto repair shop told me the the warranty providers want argue about hourly rates and require that you use cheap parts and used parts.

It seems to me to be a business model that can’t work, because of crooks on both sides. If it was like they say, what would prevent me from buying a policy, then taking my covered car to a buddy mechanic who SAYS my car needs work and says he performed it, (but didn’t) and we split the money….? Real simple insurance fraud. Real simple. Just like auto mfgrs have to police the dealers REAL carefully to prevent warrantee fraud.

We no longer accept them (car sheild) at the dealer I work at. Matter of fact we’ve gotten to the point if a said contract cannot easily be contacted we simply stop attempting. It’s not our responsibility to get someone to pay the customers bill. Hold time over an hour is not uncommon.

….that said Zurich is one of the better ones to deal with from experience.

When you hear testimony "They paid for my replacement transmission" its either a fake review or its one of the very VERY VERY few that actually got good service. The exception and not the norm. Sometimes the parts to replace are covered but not the labor. Think head gaskets. They pay the $175 for gaskets but not the $2900 in labor. All of them should be treated as garbage.

Common sense tells me that if they are making money on selling something then the consumer will lose most of the time.

Well, that’s how insurance works. You spread the risk out over all your clients while they pay to be covered. Health, fire, auto liability. Most of us can afford to spend $1000/yr for auto liability, few of us can afford to pay someone’s medical bills we injure.

From what I understand, they don't pay for diagnostic work. If you come into the shop with a rod knocking and no oil pressure, any competent mechanic would say you need a new engine. Car Shield requires that the engine be torn down to verify where the problem is before they will pay. So, they may pay for a new engine but you are still on the hook for all of that diagnostic work of tearing down the engine to find exactly where the problem is. This info was on a news program talking about class action lawsuits against Car Shield.

I wouldn't even call or email them - you might get put on a marketing list and get relentless calls.

20-some years ago I bought a warranty for a used car I'd bought because it's exhaust manifolds were known to crack.
Sure enough, they did, and the warranty paid for replacements, minus the deductible.
Bottom line, I was ahead on the deal, and I dropped the warranty when it expired.
Maybe not my best ethical moment in retrospect, but I was in survival mode at the time, if that matters.
Karma's since been well-repaid...

I'd bet the cost of the warranty is calculated in similar fashion to insurance rates, and of course the less they pay out, the better their bottom line.
They may not be regulated as much as insurers, though.
Haven't bought a warranty for anything since, however.

When I bought the BMW two years ago I bought a warranty. Not car shield and I don't remember who, but within the first two months the electric water pump went out, they paid to have it fixed, no issues. Pretty much got the price of the warranty back in that repair. No issues since though. I won't talk about the garage that did the repair, shady characters.
