I've removed lots of vinyl speed-equipment decals using a heat gun, but I'm wondering about the '73 Duster 340 side stripes...

Car was painted & re-striped about 10 years ago, and been a garage queen since.
So, I'm thinking the stripes should be removable without damaging the paint, using that process.
And that there should be no fading/witness afterwards.
The reasons I'm debating it:
1. Had a '72 Gold Duster a couple years ago whose original side molding was baked on, and NOTHING would remove the adhesive, except sanding.
2. I don't want to bet the cost of a re-paint.

I'm probably worrying in vain, but I really don't like that stripe design.

Should come off with a hair dryer and by rolling the vinyl back over top of itself very slowly. Warm up a foot or so at a time and work your way down the car. Don't pull on it upward, or do it in a hurry. Even if the rest of the paint is not faded the paint under the decals is likely to look different from the surrounding paint due it not being washed and rubbed on by waxing etc. so a light polish job may be required.

They do make those 3M vinyl stripe wheels too, but I have never tried one.

Be VERY careful with the vinyl remover wheels. They can and will damage the paint. I only use them when I am planing on repaint the car or area. They sale hard plastic razor blades that I have used with good success on stripes on a 1998 Durango that where their from the factory, when using the heat gun.

i am a pro bodyman / painter. i use them at least 1 time a week..
if used properly they won't damage paint. the key is going SLOW with the wheel. this keeps the heat build up down.
the best suggestion is use a battery powered hand drill and keep the rpm below 500rpm, preferably about 300rpm..

if you used lacquer anything in the paint job. don't even think about using a stripe eraser wheel on it.
if you used modern 2K products on the METAL from start to finish you won't have any problems. if plastic anything you will probably need to repaint if using a wheel.

I tried the wheel and it will damage the paint pretty easy but I `m no pro by any stretch. The plastic razors do work well though.

I'm sure it's BC/CC paint, and I've used & have the stripe-remover wheels - I think the stripes are wide enough that heat is best removal method.

iagree We frequently use the wheels. When used properly, they work very well with no damage to modern paint. IF there is paint damage, the issue is NOT the wheel.
