There's alot of gray area in how vins are handled and the process varies by state.
But, yes, the vin is almost certainly stamped on the frame.

I'm looking at a '74 Jeep CJ-5, a fiberglass tub has been put on. I'm wondering if the VIN tag didn't get swapped to the new tub, can the Jeep be registered/licensed? Is the VIN number put on the frame of the 'ol CJ's? The Jeep does have a clean title. Its currently running, driving, licensed. Maybe I'm over thinking the situation? I'm going to do an in-person inspection next weekend. Thank-you. I had a cj-7 that was a fiberglass tub. The vin tag from the rusted tub was swapped to the replacement tub. If there are no numbers on the tub or frame you are asking for problems. There has to be a match from the title to the vehicle [PERIOD]. With a bill of sale, an signed affidavit stating the repairs, and an inspection I would think they will issue you a state assigned vin. If its a cheap woods beater I would not be concerned. If is bigger money I would be concerned.
