And just heard that Tommy Smothers passed away on 12/26 from lung cancer. Dick & Tommy were always great for some laughs back in their heyday. It's strange seeing people like this many of us have known all our lives dropping off. RIP Tommy.

They were gearheads, too - sponsored or ran Olds door cars, IIRC.

Very true.

Wonder if they have stuff tucked away.

Did his brother Dick drive a Formula A? car some. Of did they just own the team?.

I remember seeing one of their white 442 SS convertibles being raced at the old Irwindale track in 1972 and in 1973, I don't think it was one of the brothers driving it do to being a regular weekend bracket racing day, not a NHRA division or points race. Probably one of their trusted team members doing R&D on it to try and make it go faster shruggy work

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Here's what's claimed to be the only survivor of the six cars fielded by the Smothers Brothers Racing Team. It's a '69 Cutlass S W-31 convertible (one of 26!).
I shot it at the Philadelphia Concours d'Elegance at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in June 2022.
Jim Waibel was the driver.

And here's a shot of it outdoors at Hershey, also in 2022.

One partner delivering “fast & smart” lines
and the other partner delivering “slow, dumb & funny”
makes a good team.

The technique is credited to the not so well known Al Boasberg
who advised George Burns and Gracie Allen to switch roles,
which led to great comedy success.

sample quote

Al Boasberg, a vaudeville legend who was good at understanding the chemistry of teams or the special identity of individual performers and could write to their strengths.
...snip..
The formula that evolved was that George would say something and Gracie would react in a confused manner that often took the words told to her too literally or else she misinterpreted them entirely.
...snip..
Boasberg died by telling a joke at a party, suffering a heart attack and falling down a flight of stairs which vaudevillians also described as “his big finish”.

end quote

Tommy and Dick both deserve credit for taking this to new heights.

I remember Dick in interviews would credit “dumb” Tommy
for consistently creating much more than 50% of the material.

That they were both gearheads further bolsters their thinking ability.

RIP
