I know about the RO cars from 64/65, 67 and 68. But was curious what MOPAR support for racing in 69 and 70. Specifically Hemi using Carter AFBs.
I came across a 1970 Hemi street AFB rear carburetor that was modified for racing, but not your typical owner type modifications. This carb was professionally modified in my opinion, with some unique features, factory type plugs, precision machine work; Vanke primary venturi's but unique jetting and meter rods. Vacuum ports plugged, but a metered brass bleed plug installed in what would have been the distributor vacuum port. Modified air valve, and pinned choke but blade still on, while all fast idle and choke control removed.
Did mopar provide this kind of support to racers driving 70 model hemi's that had to use street carbs? Shops that specialized in this type of mod in 69 and 70 time frame? Thanks for any info.

Mopar spent a lot of time on carb/intake mods. Their instructions are in various bulletins and engine books. Most of the carbs I've seen modified were Holleys but there are instructions for AFB's too. Look close for signature if it was professionally done.

No stamps but it needs a better cleaning to ensure. I have seen a top on a carb I had that had a G stamped in it. I have a set of 67 carbs that had multi digit serial number on back of top and base. What would the letter mean?
I have the race manual, this is street afb and the vanke mod was simple. This carb is more elaborate. As example, the distributor vacuum tube was removed, and a brass plug with an extremely small air bleed hole in it was pressed into the carb body. Similar to air bleed on top of holley. The choke bleed was plug, so maybe a compensation? If so nothing a basic owner would do in my opinion. John Bauman did a lot of carbs for Chrysler, then eventually he started doing them for anyone that got hooked up. When he did some for my customers he stamped his initials in them along with some numbers. The Chrysler race cars never got stamped. I have a set of carbs on my A12 he did - no stamps. Just a magic marker F and R on the vacuum pods.

I've had Bauman crossram carbs, 4500's and I think some inline Holleys but I probably wouldn't remember the markings if I saw them again. I wish we had Iphones back then.

Is John still in business, contact? Passed away - I think 1979. I sold off most of his stuff for his wife. Still have a lot of jetting and misc. stuff that didn’t sell. Wife told me to just keep it.

What is the truth about Johns death he had given me one of Mopar's jet packages at the Mopar sponsored warm up, test and tune, race at the old Irwindale 1/4 mile drag strip for Steve and Linda Myers Pink Panther A/SA Hemi GTX in either 1973 or maybe the year before in 1972. That jetting slowed the car down due to it being made for SS cars with the after market Rat Roadster two piece intake Manifold, not the stock intake I don't remember if it was Tom Hoover or Dick Maxwell told us west coast Mopar racers about John's death in 1979 or maybe in 1980 at one of their drag seminars in CA before they went B.K. the first time

So was he the only carter guy? What other shops or individual was doing afb for the street manifold? Anyone still around that was doing trick stuff to the afb? Would love to talk to someone with practical knowledge on the AFBs for street hemi John did any carb used on a Mopar. Another guy, an engineer hooked up in the race program did them but wasn’t as good as John. He passed too. I personally don’t know of anyone as good as John was.

I bought a Hemi Dart from a well-to-do gentleman in the 70's. All of his parts were the best money could buy. It had a Diamond Stage III maxi-plenum crossram on it and Bauman carbs. A friend of mine had a 65 and Barnett had built his motor. Barnett was the top dog back then. Top dog. You know how Super Stock guys crow about a couple of hundreths. And how long it took them to get there. He put that crossram on his car and went .15 faster the first race with it. He was in love. And of course Bauman designed the hood scoop for the 68 Dart/Barracuda, 69 6 pak and Pro Stock Missile.

So what classes would dictate you had to use a street hemi AFB. This is a 70 carb which was from the emission time vice a 66-67 carb. So I am assuming it was a 70 7-1 car being raced? NHRA Stock and Super Stock required the correct part number carburetor up until a few years ago. IHRA and AHRA were usually a little more lax where they didn't need to be the correct number, but had to measure correctly. In recent years, NHRA did away with the part number requirement and switched to the "measure correctly" method as well for some combinations. Example: Street Hemi's can use Edelbrock 1405's.
