As some you may know, I’ve been gathering tech and parts for the 73’ Duster I picked this summer in hopes of making fun runner with maybe a couple track runs a year if plans go right. My plans was to rip out the 318 And drop in a 440 with a nasty cam and enough compression to survive on 91 goat piss they disguise as gasoline here in CA. While picking up a load of parts, my friend mentioned to me he has a Torqustorm supercharger for a small block. He pulled it off a numbers 340 with less than 1000 street miles on it. He was afraid that it would make too much power and might window the block, so off it came. He’s offered it to for a very nice discount, including the carb. The Duster is the only car I currently have I could throw the blower on, but not sure if a little huffer is something I want to deal with. I have several 440 cores ready for building, but have a few small blocks as well I could build up too. Personally, the 440 with be fun from just the torque aspect, but thinking the whine of the little blower that could might be a fun stoplight bandit. What do you guys think would be a good choice?

I have a 511" low deck and it rips. We also have a 360 with a little roots blower that makes 8lbs. It also rips. Packaing, price and preference dictate your choice.

Well I had a turbod 318 and once it spooled up it was a blast. But my motor had zip for bottom end. It was like steppin' on a plum. I replaced it with a Shortrams 440, crazy low end torque now but lacks the turbos top end charge. All in all I prefer the 440.

I have a couple of N/A big blocks (580 and a 655). These are pretty much race engines but not total all out deals as we bracket race. They make great torque but I wouldn't class them as drive anywhere street engines. (cam lifts are .750" and .850"+ respectively) I love the look of a roots blower, just something about them but a centrifugal style blower is a lot more efficient. No reason why a properly tuned one wouldn't work on a small block, I've toyed with the idea myself but the idea had major mission creep (as all idea's do) so we just concentrate on the N/A stuff.

I've had a blown 340 Volare Road Runner for years. 7.9-1, 240@.050 cam, small worn out GMC 6V, home ported factory heads, decent converter. It's not a rocket, but is very good on the street. WAy more power than the drag radials can handle without spin. Runs 11.0@122 in street trim. Biggest issue is it's heavy, 3875 lbs. The racecar is a 580" which is much quicker. But also much more radical. Doug

Both can make power, I just prefer a big cam big block. I have to have that nasty idle. Without that, it just doesn't appeal to me. That's one of the main reasons I don't care for the newer hellcat stuff...they sound like station wagons.

I've had roots blown, twin turbo, single turbo, n/a, centrifugal. All are fun but I'm currently most interested in/having fun with naturally aspirated stuff. Just all comes down to goals and personal preference.

That's one of the main reasons I don't care for the newer hellcat stuff...they sound like station wagons. Same. The appeal to the old stuff to me is how obnoxious they are- the nasty idle, the loose converter, the noise, and the lack of refinement. I've heard some LS's that have decent chop to them but I haven't heard a Hellcat or Coyote that sounds decent at idle.

Why not a blown Big block..For a street car that would be the way I would go. Of course I have already been there done that but considering doing another.

The problem from a blown big block makes 'too much' power on the street. With a motor estimated to make just under 500hp, and then throwing a blower on it will make 650-700 possible hp, seems excessive for a street car. The benefit of the small block supercharger is that my car is already set up for small block and have everything to mount it. To be honest, the cammed big block sounds like a better idea, but worry about the new sound laws California is enforcing.

My NA pump gas street car made 706 to the tire. Its mild mannered and I can drive it anywhere. I guess its all in the eye of the beholder. California laws will not look any more or less stringent on any of the combos listed.

Small block and blower. I'd love to be in a position to mess around with forced induction. If you're getting a great deal on it then try it out. If you don't like it then sounds like you'll make money on the parts.

Do something different. Do the Torque Storm on a small block. I don't know your budget or your power goals but a 318 340 or 360 with a centrifugal supercharger would be perfect for the street. Keep the boost in the range that will let your engine live forever and enjoy power in all RPM ranges.
Keep old mopars alive.

From a build perspective, small block would be easier from sourcing parts, but would end up costing the same as the big block. Header clearance on a big block with power steering, booster assembly and weight, te small block could be a better choice. I do have a ton of 318's na da couple of 5.9 Magnums coming in.

Roots type blower on anything is a blast on the street. The off idle torq. is addictive. It's a shame tires are so expensive,,,I destroyed a set of MT DragRadials in about an hour one Saturday afternoon. Can smoke them for as far as you want.
For seat of pants fun...they are the best. Max performance...turbos and centrifugal superchargers are best. 10.76@124..1.54 -60ft. 440/ 727/Dana60 with 3.33 Ratio. Shift at 5,000....trap RPM 5,100.
