Does anyone know of a tool that will work to pull the drive lug off a diesel power steering pump. None of the pulley pullers I have will fit.

Your replacement didn't come with the lug on it ? The one I replaced did .

I did a google and you might have to improvise something .

Yes it came with the drive lug on it, but I want to use this pump on my magnum swapped 74 as I'm doing a hydroboost conversion on it. I may have to just swap the reservoir to get the two return line connections.

Been awhile but, iirc some mid late 90s GM vans had hydroboost and a remote PS reservoir that i think had the second return nipple. Connected to a regular ham can pump reservoir. If I'm right, get one of those, and a length of hose. Put the reservoir on the fender or core support.

Yes they did, the GM van I got the hydroboost off of had that set up. However the pump is different and I would have no way to plumb the remote reservoir to the magnums pump. I looked at that when I was taking the parts off the van.

Ok , I get what you are trying to do now, the hole down the middle of the shaft is blind and from googling I saw a puller bolt that had a long snout of sort that would bottom out in the blind hole. You''ll probably need to improvise a pilot that goes into that hole for whatever use use to press against.

That isn't the problem, the problem is no puller I can find is thin enough to get under the drive lug and between the pump housing. In other words, I can't grab the drive lug with anything.

Tough challenge.

To be as gentle as possible, I would first try chilling down the entire pump assembly in a freezer (typically -12 degrees f) but dry ice in a styrofoam cooler - 130 degrees F) would be considerably better.
Wrap up the pump except for the drive lug with cloth below aluminum foil and chill it down.
Buy three small chisels to drive sideways in the small circular space below the drive lug.
Bring the chilled pump out,
heat the drive lug with either a torch or electric heat gun,
then gently tap in the chisels equal amounts in turn.

Alternate method.

Drill a shallow “divit” in the top center of the drive lug spade.
Buy a small 3 arm puller.
Go down the drive lug to near the bottom and drill/grind 3 indentations for the bottoms of your puller arms to grip.
Upper sides of the indentations must be flat or angle upward.

Using your favorite penetrating oil
or applying heat to drive lug
could bolster chance of puller success.

Good Luck.

If none of above works
a local machine shop could make the drive lug anew
after splitting the pressed on one.

Most likely have to take the pump apart. Then press the drive lug off the shaft.

I thought about taking it apart, but at that point I'll just put the can on my magnum pump. I might play with it later.
Thanks guys.

Years ago I attempted to try and remove that lug from a couple pumps at work. My power steering puller broke in the process. At the time that “cheap” pump was not cheap, and my thought was to transfer that lug to a regular Saginaw pump. I struck out. That said years ago online the lug was available separate. Another “interesting” situation occurred one time as a replaced a pump on a ctd with an aftermarket reman. It was back two weeks later with intermittent loss of power assist. I ended up finding that lug didn’t have enough interference fit and would randomly spin on the shaft.

Good to know. I suppose I could cut it off with a cut off wheel if necessary, but still changing the can seems easier.

Are you trying to save the lug? If not, take a die grinder and grind a slot in the lug until you are just barely at the shaft. This should relieve it enough that you can get the lug off. I did this very thing on two lug nuts that had seized on the studs. Worked like a charm.

I don't need the lug so I may do this.

I got it off, cut into it with a thin cut off wheel trying to not cut into the shaft, ground it down almost to the shaft with an angle grinder, wedged a small cold chisel in between the drive lugs and the end of the shaft and that got it moving. Cut the drive lugs off, ground some off the bottoms of the puller jaws to fit under the lug, clamped the jaws in a vice and it pulled off. It wasn't pretty but it's off with only two very small nicks on the shaft from the cut off wheel. I'm calling it good. laugh2

The little nicks are of no concern, I was going to suggest to just cut it off but sometimes the obvious is a little too hard for some to handle.
