Yes it was real. engineering prototype. One still exists. A great answer that came to late amongst other factors (gas, emmisions, insurance).

It used to be covered in the car mags every so many years in the 80-s. Cool deal. (the motor)

HMM, never knew one got out the door, Cool!!! Article says over 400 HP which seems unimpressive, to me anyway. But they also didn't say if it was at the crank or wheels. I'm going to assume the crank as rear wheel dyno's weren't that common when the car was likely put together.
the other thing that puzzle me I s I don't recall S&M running a notchback nor could I find any pic's on a kwk google search. But I could be mistaken. Can anyone clarify that ? beer

I thought two of them survived?

“positive swirl” combustion chamber

Makes me think the Nissan engineers were aware of that as it also showed up in the Z24i NAPS-Z.
NAPS-Z can be thought of as a 4 cyl, fuel injected, dual plug, emissions descendant of the Ball Stud Hemi,
rather than my assumption of the earlier engines.

sample quote

Note: All USDM gasoline Z20, Z22 and Z24 engines were known as NAPS-Z (NAPZ or NAPS-Z Nissan Anti-Pollution System), NAPZ motors had dual spark-plugs (two per cylinder) except the pre-82 versions and latest versions of the Z24i as fitted to the Pathfinder. All NAPZ engines sold in California reportedly had dual plug heads regardless of the year.

The fuel-injected version referenced above was denoted as the Z24i (Throttle Body Fuel Injection) and was first available in the Nissan Model 720 ST pickup during the 1985 model year and was replaced in 1990 by the KA24E engine and they share the same bellhousing pattern. Beside the fuel-injection, a significant change for the Z24i was the addition of an optical crank angle sensor in the distributor rather than a vacuum advance and ignition module. This allowed the JECS throttle-body injection system to identify the top dead center (TDC) of cylinder number one.

Engine Displacement: 2,389 cc (2.4 L) Bore x Stroke: 89 mm × 96 mm (3.50 in × 3.78 in) Compression Ratio: 8.3:1

When Bob Lutz said “No Hemi can meet emissions standards” the 5.7 engineers pulled out the SAE paper written by Nissan and he changed his mind”

I saw one in person at the Chrysler Tech Center museum back when it was open. I have pictures of it somewhere at home.

The Hemi head was superior on the dragstrip and oval but EXPENSIVE and impractical for a mass produced passenger car engine. The wedge head was a fantastic passenger car engine and great hot street performer- inexpensive to produce but didn't have potential to dominate racing. Along comes the Ball Stud Hemi. Canted valves -though not better than the Hemi head design when going for all out racing were still very VERY good. Not better than a hemi head BUT better than the inline valve wedge head. But the big bonus for Chrysler was the Ball stud used stamped steel rocker arms mounted on a rocker arm stud. Super super inexpensive to make and reliable. The hemi valve train while a work of art is far from inexpensive. But the Mopars version of a BB Chevy would have been better than the 396 because the mopar had a deep skirt block that is incredibly strong where as the chevy has the crankshaft well below the oil pan mount surface. What could have been. I grew up having a confrontational rivalry with chevy guys- they were all arrogant, hated mopars and were loud mouthed.
But The BBC is a force to be reckoned with- at least when it comes to building the engine into a big power High RPM performer. Tons of affordable aftermarket support to remedy any valve train limitations that arise during this journey and I imagine this rang true all the way back to the late 60s early 70s as well.

Keep old mopars alive.

per the article, the car was supposedly campaigned by Sox and Martin with a 440 prior to the BS HEMIN being installed. I don't recall S&M running a notchback nor could I find any pic's on a kwik google search. But I could be mistaken. Can anyone clarify that ? beer

Well, considering that, at the time, the 383 was 335 hp in the Road Runner, the 440 HP was 375hp and the 440+6 was rated at 390 hp, so 400+ from a milder Hemi engine (when the 426 Hemi was rated at 425) isn't bad at all...

Have you guys seen the pictures of the OHC hemi heads? There is a guy selling one head on FB (for like 20k!). Someone has also posted pics of a hemi that has a pair of the heads on it. I asked the guy who posted it and says that it doesn't run. I don't know if this link will take you to the discussion or not.. https://www.facebook.com/groups/MOP...261851&notif_t=group_comment_mention

Thanks for the info, Devil.

I wish they could get the thing finished and running.

Would be awesome if KB could get a hold of it , make the heads out of aluminum and strengthen any weak spots. Then it would be the ultimate gen2!

Being at the Detroit Fairgrounds swap meets in the late 70's and early 1980's saw a lot of unusual prototype and one off Chrysler, GM, and Ford items, along with the more mundane stuff. Those guys must have had huge lunch boxes to get a lot of that stuff out of the building. The stories of semi drivers stopping off at certain peoples shops on the way to guard patrolled salvage yards would perk up any gear heads ears. A magical time, to say the least. Wish I would have bought everything I saw.

July 19th should be "Drive Like Rockford Day". R.I.P. Jimmie.
