I was cleaning up our barbecue before bringing it in for the winter and I noticed the paint on the sheet metal burner dividers has flaked away and the surfaces are rusty. I'm planning to refinish them this winter. What brands of spray-can high-heat paint have a nice gloss and decent durability?

TIA,
Harold

Ive never had good luck with supposed "hi temp" paints, even following the directions to a T it always burns off. With food involved I wouldn't even bother.

I am no help with your paint question but please tell me you don't stop using your grill in the winter. I'm in WI and I use my grill(s) all year long! I have a gas Weber and a Traeger pellet...one of them gets fired up at least twice a week all year long!!

VHT with a properly prepped surface should do the trick or Rustoleum makes some hi heat BBQ paints. Not sure on the gloss part ? beer

I don't know if there are any barbeque paints offered in glossy. The heat turns any paint to an ash graphite flat color. Brush the metal free of flakes and corrosion. Clean it and paint it with any BBQ paint. Touch it up or redo it as needed. I did this with motorcycle 4 into 2 exhaust systems. Always had to redo the hottest spots as the paint doesn't last there.

Keep old mopars alive.

Reading through these posts pops into my thoughts the Moparts thread about graphite coating treatment for the outside surfaces of freshly blasted clean cast iron.

In mining ore concentration tons of super finely ground “magnetite” powder is used.
Magnetite is shiny black and is the more oxidized form of rust.
Coarse magnetite is used to shot blast surfaces as it works faster than sand.
Dusting still wet BBQ paint with either fine or coarse magnetite might improve how long it lasts in a high heat spot.

The original metal in the BBQ should have been the “half price stainless” steel alloy invented in South Africa called 3Cr12
as opposed to the 18-8 stainless.

As knife people know, there is now a very large variety of Stainless or “Rostfrei” alloys.

Kind of where my head is. Whatever Weber coats their kettle grills with lasts forever, but I believe that's porcelain. Not sure how to apply that...

Don't know if this is the way it is done on a grill but I remember how it was done in school in a kiln at very high temperatures.

Porcelain (/ˈpɔːrs(ə)lɪn/) is a ceramic material made by heating raw materials, generally including kaolinite, in a kiln to temperatures between 1,200 and 1,400 °C (2,200 and 2,600 °F). The greater strength and translucence of porcelain, relative to other types of pottery, arise mainly from vitrification and the formation of the mineral mullite within the body at these high temperatures. End applications include tableware, decorative ware such as figurines, and products in technology and industry such as electrical insulators and laboratory ware.

PPG has a hi temp paint that does not burn off. Our shop we have a wood burner that is made out of 2 old air compressors. We sand blasted the tanks then sprayed this paint on it. Lets just say I can keep our shop warm enough even on a day when it is -20 outside here in South Dakota and we can work in short sleeves. It has been on there for a good 3 years or more. Not burned off. Does not smell when fire is rolling. I have had the fire rolling too. Our paint booth has been 85-90 degrees in the booth before when get a good fire rolling.
