Is there a source for wire in 14g, 16g, 18g, etc., with colored code striping? For example a red wire with white stripe, black wire with red stripe, black wire with gray stripe, etc., The big box and auto parts stores handle the standard black, white, red, green, blue wire but not with the additional code stripe. Wondering if there is some place that specializes in this type of automotive wiring harness wire to repair a section of a complete automotive wiring harness, Thanks in advance.

I have seen some sellers on ebay offering packs of rolls which includes wiring with the extra strip/trace on them, but some of them are also somehow standard stripping codes, being black &/or white strip. Now, black wires with yellow strip like some parking light circuits, or black with green or tan strip like front turning lights got, or brown with yellow trace… never have seen that being sold freely out of the shelf. I guess those harness manufacturers get these custom made per request due the volume they handle to make their products.

Sure I can speak just from what I see on line… I’m not in USA to certify this with physical local shops. But in Venezuela I had the same problem, so I was allways hunting for good used harnesses on local JYs, no matter the car model just to get a donor with correct wiring colors when fixing.

I get almost all of my wire from the vehicles in pick-a-part yards. Particularly the Dodge trucks from the 80s. They used much of the same size and colors of wire that our muscle cars did and they are still finding their way into those yards. Other than those trucks, the biggest issue with the wiring in newer vehicles is that a lot of it is smaller than our old wiring. But with the huge selection there, almost anything can be found.

never bought from them, but they sell various wires with various covers by the foot.

I guess this place died, but I used them before.

page is still up but says under construction. no update since 2011.

this place has 56 color choices if you can't find the trace you want at the top link

and to think, i spent a month this past summer disassembling four large boxes of wiring harnesses i had collected over the years, into separate wires to be used as spares "just in case". laugh2
when i was done, my eyeballs were crossed for days afterward, looking at all the different colors and tracers. biggrin

Have not bought from these people but have colors and stripes

https://www.eficonnection.com/home/category/wire/pre-cut-txl-wire/25ft-lengths?start=175

These people have multiple colors and used to have stripeing services for the wires to add the color stripe.

https://www.iewc.com/wire-and-cable/automotive-wire-and-cable

https://www.waytekwire.com/catalog/wire-and-cable

Hope it helps.

A paint marker or sharpie may work in a pinch. Fix one end or the wire in a bench vise and pull it taut. Have a helper hold the marker 90 degrees to the wire, and run it down the wire wink shruggy beer

Now imagine doing that with all white wire, trying to find the one you're looking for.

Anyone know what type wire was used originally? From what I measured in my engine compartment, GXL thin wall cross-linked automotive wire is the closest match in insulation thickness, and is the most common according to this FAQ. They also offer an option to stripe wires, but you have to fill out a form for a quote, so I'm guessing there's a minimum order not cost effective for the hobbyist. Prices for solid color wire don't look too bad, and you don't have to buy 1,000 feet. 100 feet of 18 AWG GXL for instance is $8.50, although they have a surcharge on orders under $100, so if you're doing a lot of colors, you could get by with a bunch of different colored 100' spools for $100-$200.

Ever worked on an International? All black wires with a number you can't read.

I can see with that many wires there is no way that you could ever have enough colors and code stripe colors to ID all of them. Then on top of that you get into colors fading and making it hard to ID again and then add in the possibilities of COLOR BLIND aircraft mechanics and that is a real possibility for safety failure. Besides numbers do they also use letters for coding wire on aircraft?

Outboard Marine Corporation (OMC) makers of Evinrude and Johnson outboards printed all of the wiring schematics in their service manuals in black and white for many many years. Despite many complaints. Color came to the wiring schematics immediately after that chief engineer retired. He was color blind and insisted that the manuals be printed in black and white.

Schematics have been printed in black and white since forever. Pissing and moaning about some one dude being the fault is wrong. maybe it's the illiterate mechanics that can't read that are the problem.
