Here's what other people had to say... I've copied this from posts over the last year or so...
Logan426
I measured my 70 AAR and from the front edge of the doors, the screw center measurements are 17 1/2 and 20 1/2 and 15/16 down from the body line.
measurements taken from a 71 cuda from the front edge of the door to the front edge of the base. Driver side 16 3/4 back from the edge of the door to the base. On the passenger it is 16 1/8 from the front edge of the door back to the base.
05dakota
Passenger’s is same as driver's (talking about 70 challenger)
Classof70Chally
These numbers are from my car. (70 Challenger) The drivers side mirror has the leading screw 17.5" from the front edge of the door in a straight, level line. The passenger side leading screw is 16.0" from the front edge of it's door. All screws on both sides appear to be about 1.25 " below the first 'body break' line which is about one inch outboard of the window channel. (Are those mirrors original to the car?) As far as I know, yes. Would I bet my life on it?, no.
(Tav edit: measuring in a level line will produce flawed results when comparing two or more vehicles. Level is always level, but the position of the cars relative to level will differ due to leaf spring selection, tire & wheel height, suspension height setting, etc. The front edge of the door is curved. Measuring in a level line will result in the measurement coming from a different point on the curved door edge depending on suspension height etc.)
Hans
Both the left and right are located at the same distance (on my '73 anyway) (‘Cuda)
Alyerpal2
I know the front screw goes right behind the window channel slide. Just as the drivers side.

If I can get into my trailer I can do the standard mirror placement on my 340 car which is no help to you on the T/A clone but I figure you might want the info anyways.
The pink car (painted dual racing mirrors) just got hauled off to the resto shop so I might not be able to access it.
That would be great Ken! Thanks!!

Hi Ola, thanks for helping out. I'm a little surprised to hear that your 70 standard mirror is located in the same place as your 70 racing mirror. I've never personaly measured a standard mirror (just seen a few at shows), but I've been looking through engineering drawings for mirror measurements and found one for V7 pinstripes from 10-10-69 that seems to indicate that the racing mirror was located differently from the standard mirror (see pic). None of the other engineering drawings I have that show mirrors contain any measurements.
The V7 pinstripes & The T/A stripes (maybe others, I'll have to check, 71 challenger side stripes?, 73-74 cuda side stripes?) have cutouts in the stripe for the mirrors, so correct mirror location is important. (I know the V7 pinstripes are painted on the car, but I still called it a cutout)

My 70 Challenger built 10-69 has factory dual chrome mirrors. The mount holes for the passenger side mirror measure 1 1/8th down from top bodyline on door. Front and Rear mounting holes measure: 17 5/16" and 20 3/8"
For the driver side, 1 1/8" Down and from edge are 17 1/2" and 20 1/2"

Thanks a bunch Joe, Is that for both sides? (they're the same?)
Sorry, originally it was just the passenger side measurement. I just edited it and added the driver side.
Please note that the passenger side spacing between the mount holes is off slightly but I measured it 3 times and that is what it is.

It's only off by 1/16th, that isn't much. As long as the mirror mounts up OK and the screw goes in all the way it'll be alright. You might want to test fit it before final assembly though, just to make sure.

Is it possible that somewhere in the car's life the door or door skin was replaced and the body shop had to put holes in for the mirror?

I think the minor variations seen from car to car easily fall into production variances, another possilbity it the holes are punched prior to the door skin being attached to the door shell, if the flanges shift 1/4" the flange crimper won't stop.. A measurement from the door handle pocket to the holes might be revealing...
I just checked six different doors (Aug 69 Hamtramck, Apr 70 St. Louis (roadrunner), June 70 Hamtramck, ?? 71 Hamtramck) and on all of them, the door skin wraps around the door 1/2 inch front and rear. From what I've seen the door skins seem to have been put on pretty consistantly. I agree it's possible the factory may have had some slip ups, but I think they would be the exception rather than the rule.
I also don't think the mirror holes were pre-drilled in the door skins (at least not on the passenger side) because the mirror was optional.
Production variances are still a possibility. 1/8th is very reasonable, 1/4 variation might be acceptable I think. The 1 5/16 variation reported on 70 challenger passenger mirrors (Classof70Chally vs. jrwoodjoe) seems too much, especially when 70 'cuda measurements are all consistantly the same. IF production variations exist we should be able to see them after collecting some more data.
If you have access to any E body mirrors located in their original factory location, could you please post measurements Randy? (particularly 70 challenger passenger side, I know you like cars with lots of options, as do I)

No, original door untampered and I know the entire history of the car and previous owners. I think it was just drilled slightly off for whatever reason. Mirror mounts fine since I took it off the door before teardown. I know it's only 1/16th of an inch but assumed it would have been on the money.

I just measured the mirrors on my 73 Challenger. I've owned the car since it was 6 mos. old, so I know the history on the car. It has the original doors & skins. Car came equipped with dual chrome sport mirrors, which I've replaced with painted sport mirrors, using the original screw hole mounts.
From the front leading edge of the door to the centerpoint of the front screw, both mirrors measure 15 3/4".
From the top edge of the door to the front screw centerpoint, the drivers side measures 7/8", and the passenger side measures 3/4".

Tav, mine is a 71 Cuda with original sheet metal, and OE chrome dual racing/sport mirrors. Drivers door: 1" down from top to screw centers 16 5/8" (front edge to forward screw center) 19 3/4" (front edge to rear screw center) Passenger door: 1" down from top to screw centers 17" (front edge to forward screw center) 20 1/8" (front edge to rear screw center) Thanks for taking this on. Hope this info helps! Dave
