Just had a customer bring in a truck with a (6.4 hemi rebuilt about 1 year ago) random misfire and doing some diagnostics on it I fingered out air was coming up and out the intake when I put it in the cylinder so I pulled the intake and heads and there is stickey gooey stuff all over in the intake and intake ports of the heads... if I touch the ports and pull my finger up slowly the stuff will make strings for about an inch or inch and a half??? It's in every port and seems to be making the valves hard to move in and out after pulling the springs out, what in the world could it be? I pulled the fuel tank to see if there was something like sugar or something in the gas but it is clean as can be in there, no beads rolling around in the fuel and no funny smells...

Owner says no additives ever just premium fuel. Fuel looks and smells normal but he has driven quite a bit since it started because I didn't have time to dig into it right away.
Clean and dry under throttle body.
Oil seems a little thick but not stickey and stringy like the stuff in the intake but he says it is rotella 15-40 so I guess that's expected (I told him to use 5-40 mobile 1 but nobody listens to me).
He said it started misfiring after filling up near yellowstone the udder day on a road trip and he has ran several tanks through since then.

Oh and I have had the truck apart in the shop for a week waiting on his insurance to come look (he thinks someone put sugar in the fuel) and the stuff is just as stickey now as it was then so whatever it is is not drying up.

It would be interesting to mix a little sugar into a container of gasoline and see what the result is. Decades ago I was taught that sugar would merely gum up the fuel filter, but I never experimented. And I've yet to see an actual sugar-in-the-tank vehicle. Maybe it's time for me to experiment with that, now that I'm thinking about it. We test 8 pounds in a cars tank. It was a car driven but was a doner car for drive line. We were going to re-ring after hone and stick new rods and mains from.a Summit or PAW kit. I heard for years and still do that the sugar would melt get hard when engine cooled off lock it up. 8 pounds and it did nothing Well it made my friends wife mad we used all her sugar and she could not drink sweer tea. I wonder whar it would do in oil in crank case? Bet it would just be like STP or Motor Honey I think it would do more harm to put few jugs of water in.the gas tank as sugar did notta

see if water on a rag cleans it or carb cleaner, thinner ect Would tell if it's water or oil based. That'd be a first start.

One time my wife's brother had a car that supposedly his ex dumped something into the gas tank, and then the car wouldn't start. Cranked over fine. Of course we got the tank cleaned out and replaced the fuel filters. He got someone to test the "gas" we drained out. The report was antifreeze was dumped into the tank, and it was suggested that we pull the intake and clean the intake passages. The sticky, gooey stuff in the intake ports sort of cleaned up with water on a rag (you had to work at it with the wet rag, it was a mess).
The word was that if the antifreeze could have burned inside the combustion chamber it would have effected the pistons and rings much like blown head gaskets do. According to the place that did the test, we were fortunate that who ever dumped the antifreeze into the gas tank dumped in too much and diluted the gas so it didn't burn.
I have no idea how much of the story about the fuel test was factual, but the sticky stuff in the intake was correct. With the tank cleaned up, new filters, the intake manifold cleaned up and fresh gas the car ran great.

From the info given in this post so far I would guess ethanol in gasoline reacted with something. The stringy stuff you saw on your fingers is some kind of “polymer” Maybe ethanol+water+bacteria+fungus+ “God only knows” Both bacteria and fungus make complex “Biofilms” that are goo-like.polymers. Save samples of the stringy goo stuff. Buy a bottle of “Starbrite Star*Tron enzyme fuel treatment” Put the goo sample in a glass jar, cover it with Star*Tron liquid and see it it dissolves some over time. Maybe also send a sample to Starbrite company. You could send a goo sample to Oak Ridge National Lab in TN and ask that they forward it to the employees there that wheel dyno test vehicles at Oak Ridge for the EPA and have it identified, perhaps using the xray diffraction equipment that they have in abundance at that site. Last suggested step: Eat a large portion of the goo. If you die Corner will order a Toxicology report. Ask your family to post this report here on Moparts.

I have heard Stabil.... if used long enough, will make a carb or filter sticky inside, from sitting. Seafoam should alleviate the problem.

well it sat a few days waiting on his insurance to come look at it and they decided not to show up so I went to try cleaning it up and it was more or less dried and no longer sticky but water just beaded up on it and gasoline just kind of did nothing, took a phone call and did some other stuff and came back to it a couple hours later and the one I tried cleaning with gas was sticky again so I repeated the experiment and it gets sticky again after letting fresh gas sit on it a while then wipes out pretty easy with more fresh gas on a rag. There is a tiny bit of oil film from normal PCV operation that may be what makes the water bead up on it if it is indeed sugar. As an experiment I also threw some sugar in a plastic bottle with fresh gas (87 octane may contain up to 10% ethanol from my lawn mower gas can) to see what would happen and a little bit of it but not all dissolved after a few days, just gonna throw it up on the shelf with the old fuel system parts soaking in e-85 for 15+ years and see if it eventually dissolves all of it or not.

You're running these tests on the intake ports? I wonder if there was some kind of contamination in the feedstock used to mold the intake.
