Lots of things at play...did the driver have a medical issue? If so, does that mean he's not liable for the damages/injuries caused? The latter depends upon the state. Also, did he have on-track coverage for his car, and if so, what coverages did he have? Did the SCCA have coverage for the event? Did the property owner have coverage, and if so, did their coverage allow them to loan/rent out their property for this event?
The only thing I'm certain of is that the estate of the poor woman that was killed will be collecting $$ from anyone who is collectible.

Crap! My 28 year old nephew just joined the SCCA and got whatever license he needs to start getting experience at the track. (He has a Miata that he wants to race.) I no nothing about this type of racing - it is sad to see this happen.

RIP to the recently deceased.
I've instructed my descendants, unless somebody is insanely careless at the track in my demise. post-accident lawsuits are verboten, they are to cherish our shared memories, not any courtroom windfalls that ultimately only hurt the sport for others. I know the risks.
That being said, best thing car wise i ever did IMO, is put my sons thru on track driving classes, and nothing better midway than in a MIata. My middle son at Sebring Skip Barber is in #10.
Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Back in the day [late 70s] I raced in B production category of SCCA, as well as lots of local autocross racing. Lloyds of London was the only insured I found, back then, that would touch what I needed. Track racing.is, regardless of how easy it looks, inherently dangerous, racer and spectator alike. Sorry for the deaths, and agreed, in the can is bizarre, but you rake your chances.
