Well after reading the distributor phasing post i just had to check mine, with the reluctor lined up it look's like it is pointing right at #1 or real close but i noticed i have about 1/16" or a maybe a fuzz more slop in the shaft if you grab it and rotate it CW and CCW and it isn't the spring loaded pressure i'm referring to just free play that is probably where the slot in the drive gear comes into play. Is that normal or too much? Alsowith the rotor pointing to #1 and the reluctor lined up with the pickup my timing tape on the dampner is showing i'm 27 degrees advanced? My initial is set at 21 degrees so i'm a bit confused here, what's going on? Thanks.
Also with the timing mark at TDC the rotor is about a 1/2" CW past #1 on the cap and i noticed the burn mark on the rotor contact is right at the very edge on the right side in the pic. Something is fishy here, could the oil pump drive be a tooth off?

You are reading way too much into it.

Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first.

Huh? You mean it does'nt matter that the rotor does'nt point to #1 with the crank at TDC and the burn mark on the rotor is way off on the edge? I put a black mark on the right edge of the rotor contact, it's kinda hard to see...

The burn mark on the edge does not bode well. Which side of the terminal? As timing advances the rotor will swing more CCW((BB) and CW(SB). Thats why it's best to drill the hole between center/#1 terminal & check it "at speed" with your light.

It's good to have it phased yes, but don't read too much (meaning all the other stuff you are talking about) into it. It will not be phased exactly at the same spot at all rpms if you have vaccuum and mechanical advance.

Like Robert says do it while the motor is running.

Question is still the same what does it look like with it running? Put a hole in the distributor yet?

If you choose to do so drilling the hole would not ruin the cap. Not sure on the amt by moving it one tooth but I would check that out

I agree I had a hole in mine for a couple years before I finally replaced the cap.
look at the holes in this vented chevy cap.
You could always put a piece of tape over the hole if you drive your car in the rain.
