Hey all, I picked up a 2014, 2500 RAM with a blown 5.7. I have access to a very low mileage 5.7 out of a 2020 1500 RAM. I have swapped MDS engines into non-MDS trucks in the past with no issues, but never any with this much year difference. Am wondering if there are other issues, I am not aware of if I go this route. Thanks for the input. Jim.

Very easy swap. The long block will bolt in and work perfectly if you leave the MDS solenoids in it. If you replace them with the plastic plugs it will start on 8 cylinders and immediately switch to 4 cylinder mode when it gets oil pressure.

I'm on the far east side in Sidney. I go thu Missoula a fair amount, but seldom make it to your area. If i was gonna keep the truck, I would consider doing the 6.4, but It's a flipper. I looked a little closer at the newer motor, and only thing I notice is the coolant cooler between the oil pump and filter. The dealer here has one of the "Noisy" 6.4 takeout engines that I've been trying to get. That would go into my backup towing rig. Hard to beat my '05 Cummins for towing, tho. Jim

I love this engine in mine much better than my old 99 cummins, it tows about the same, gets the same MPG but the fuel and oil changes are cheaper and I could replace the entire engine for about the price of replacing the injectors in a cummins. I got a 6.4 BGE short block, eagle heads, cam, intake... and it tows better than a stock 6.4 truck and better MPG because of much higher cylinder pressure from the compression bump, earlier intake closing, less overlap, no EGR. A 5.7 in a 2500 4x4 is kind of a dog, I had a 2014 with a 5.7 and it shifted twice as many times on a trip as this one does.

That oil cooler is super easy to just unbolt it if you don't like it and screw your old nipple in the block. If you want to run it and your old engine didn't have it just leave it there and run your heater hose to it and a short piece back out, takes 5 minutes and a couple feet of heater hose to add it to a truck that didn't have it. I eventually put one on my 6.4 truck and it gets the oil temp up faster and keeps it from getting as high, I think of it more as an oil temp stabilizer. Your 2500 has plenty of space for it. You can even just leave it there with no heater hose going to it and it won't hurt anything but won't carry away much heat with no coolant flowing thru it.

One more thing I would look at is possibly the later engine might have a spacer ring in the back of the crank like the car engines, remove it if it has one but I just don't know if it does or not.

Thanks for the heads up on what to look for, Dave. I would probly agree with you on the 6.4 for most towing, but I've got a 48 ft gooseneck that usually has 2 cars in it, and I like the stability of the Dually and the Diesel then. I'll keep working on getting the 6.4 from the dealer, I've never towed with one yet. Thanks again, Jim.

If it is a warranty core your AOL and will not get it, if it was customer pay job then bribe the parts guy for a few hundred dollars.

My 2015 I just bought has a good 5.7 and a bad trans, I will be pulling out and selling the 5.7 and putting in a 6.4, this one will have a complete SRT long block with a 5.7 cam and BGE intake, it should make about the same TQ but pull a little more RPM, might even step up to a BGE cam and in that case it would basically be a high compression BGE minus EGR.

My current 2011 the previous owner added a thicker spring pack than a one ton single wheel truck plus air bags I have never aired up and it is rock solid out on the highway. I also added 20" wheels to reduce sidewall flexing. 4 hemis, a drill press a tire machine and a bunch of other crap in the bed and a 4 door 4x4 half ton ram on the 16 foot bumper pull open trailer and it was steady as can be @75 MPH, I have never pulled a trailer as big as your but I have certainly put some weight to it that would have made the old 99 cummins truck a little scary.

Hey Dave, I picked up 3, 2018, 2500's, and one needs and engine. They are all currently 5.7's. The dealer here has a warranty 6.4 with 35,000 miles out of a 2015, 2500 that had a minimal cold run noise, that he is willing to part with. Wil it work in the 2018 truck?
And, would there be any reason to chase the noise, or just run it as is? Thanks. Jim.

Probably piston slap. It should bolt right in and run just fine but it would run better with a tune. The dealer I deal with says they can't sell warranty cores unless it is an aftermarket warranty... If you don't buy it let me know please, I buy all of em I can get.
