Need a USB port for my Challenger.
I don't like using a cigarette adapter with the ashtray hanging open.
Anyone adapt something to the ashtray at the back of the console?
Want something convenient without hacking up the interior.

What have you guys done?

I added both a USB and a cigarette port to the inside of an A-body console. They're available at Amazon or ebay...sorry, no pics.

Any add on will take to a haking job. Just will depend how disturb to you this haking job.

Inside the console will demand to keep open the lid when in use, just like the cigar lighter adapter option

You can install it on the console top plate. Get an extra if you want to keep your original safe.

Otherwise, attach a bracket down the dash frame to install the USB port. This won’t get any interior part hacked. The dash frame gets several provision holes to screw in some bracket, so no extra holes are required. Bracket can be even horizontal to be hidden down the dash frame, not visible like a vertical bracket.

This is a very interesting idea, but still would need to keep the ashtray open.

You could make the same, building a container box for the usb port into the console ahstray though. The console ashtray lid is more discrete so visually don’t disturb like the dash one. Except if your chally got the rear console provision for the seatbelt storaging (earlier models), instead the ashtray.

Sure the ashtray will require some haking, but can get an extra one for that.

There are a lot of add on USB port fixtures that can be mounted under the dash, or maybe at the front of the console that can either be screwed into place, or use the glue strips to hold them in place. The screw in ones are more stable. Some come with a removable plastic cover that just hangs when its not in place. I have one of those in both my coupe and my 49 Dodge truck, but the one picture I have it really doesn't show up well. I bought mine at a local Menards store, they had a few "kit" choices in the $7- $10 range.

You touched on all the things that "bother" me. I know it’s stupid worrying about small things when the rest of the car is a beater.
Ashtray needs to be open for plug-in
Console lid needs to be open if it's inside ( I have trunk release button in console, but that's just, open lid/push button/close lid)
Don't want to cut the top plate

I had narrowed it down to 2 options, with #2 most likely, just because it's easiest
1) I have the later console with small ashtray, so maybe remove the ashtray bucket and fab a plate to mount something flush.
2) Put the power source up under dash and run USB extension cable under carpet and console that comes out by seat, then I'll have a pigtail out of sight when needed.

Mount a bracket off of the seat mount with the port under the seat. You can leave a cable plugged in most of the time and just unplug when you want to "clean things up". I had a Dart convertible back in the iPod days, installed an amp in the trunk and speakers behind the back seat and under the dash. Ran the cable to plug in the iPod under the driver's seat so I could plug it in and have tunes or coil up the cable and tuck it under where it wasn't seen unless somebody stood on their head to look under there.

It is probably not what you want,
but a Milwaukee M12 USB port can be directly wired into an automotive 12 volt source with spade lugs.

This Milwaukee M12 USB adapter/heated jacket power source is also totally unique in that it has the weird trick of going in reverse - you can plug a 5 volt USB micro plug into its top socket and it will convert this 5 volt internally to 12 volt and charge up a 12 volt lithium battery inserted into it.

Given enough time it would probably “trickle charge” up a12 volt lead acid battery.
Very unique.

I would mount one pointing down on the bottom rear of the dash. Unplug the cord and it disappears.

That was what I suggested with an horizontal bracket down the dash
