and trans back in my 66 Coronet from the bottom. First time I've even done it this way. My question is when i go to put the torsion bars back in do i put them in before i reattach the upper ball joints or do they go in after i attach the upper ball joints.? Just need some pointers on how to go about this the right way. Thanks.

I'm no expert, but I took mine off before and reinstalled them after. Maybe there is a better way, but it worked for me.

Before.

You may need plenty of rotation on the forward socket in order to get the T'bar installed. Then you can simply use a floor jack to get the spindle into the top ball joint.

Another tip for torsion bars that fight you to get in or out is to get a 1" steel rope clamp and use it to hammer on when getting the T'bar into or out of place.

I made this a while ago for torsion bar removal and installation, with a nice place to hit with a hammer or mallet. Works like a charm.

Back the torsion bar bolt adjusters out all the way if you haven't done that already and then crank, pull, down on the lower control arm to help slide the end of the torsion bar into its hole before thinking of hooking up the spindle to the upper arm twocents shruggy

You want the lower control arm to rotate so like Cab said back out the adjusters all the way but don't remove the bolts, leave them threaded in the arm.

Make sure the shock is disconnected and the pivot nut is loose.

Make sure the Lower Ball joint, Upper Ball joint OR Upper control arms pivots are disconnected. Any of the three will work to give you the ability to rotate the Lower arm enough to get the T-bar in.

If you have the brakes and spindle connected to the LCA it helps to have a jack under the LCA to support the weight.

I grease both sockets and the ends of the bar. More for corrosion protection than lubrication. IIRC the service manual says to.

Insert the Tbar into position with the rear hex sticking out of the rear of the transmission crossmember. I usually have the LCA completely loose and slip the LCA on the front of the Tbar then slide them into the K-Frame as an assembly but since your LCA is still holding the brakes and spindle slide the Tbar in from the back (Transmission Crossmember) may be the best option.

Rotate the LCA by hand or jack until you can slide the T-bar into the LCA and the transmission crossmember. I will often use a rubber mallet to coax it in at the back.

Once it is engaged on both ends I use a mallet and wood dowel (don't want to scratch or ding the bar) to drive the bar in at the back.
Old Broom handles work great. Once you can get the clip in the socket you are done.

Jack up he LCA, connect the Ball joint & Shock.

Set the ride height and then while the suspension is still on the ground tighten the LCA pivot.

Hope it helps

One thing I forgot to mention is that if you install the LCA on the end of the Tbar and slide them in as an assembly. Do not forget the Strut Rod. DAMHIK. LOL

That technique is better with a bare LCA with nothing attached like the brakes and such.

Here is a tool I purchased from Mancini to assist with torsion bar removal/install.

Rope clamps are $7 or $8 a piece.
