if i swap my 727 over to an A518, what has to be done to the shifter linkage to use my original console shifter ? also, what do i need to do to the floor pan ? pictures would be GREAT. TIA to those that have done this, and can help me decide.

I may be out of the loop but do they make a 518 that bolts up to a 440?
Gus
Exactly . . .need adapter for bellhousing and crank . . . I had a 79 Road Runner with a 440 & 518 in it - was console shift. Previous owner had installed way back in early 90's . . . uhhh, pretty sure there are the holes to bolt up the shifter mount on the 518 . . . sorry, don't have pics. Or the car . . .

The shift lever attachment point is the same so your shift linkage will drop on , what you will need to so is fab up a lower bracket for the linkage bell crank and figure out a switching scheme for the OD which is electrically ativated.
As far as floor mod. If you want to keep the factory driveline angle you have to cut out the center part of the T bar X member and raise it up and do floor pan mods , you should be able to hide it under your console. Also you'll have to fab up/modify a trans X member.

ultra-bell needed and i believe i will have to possibly modify the mount crossmember, but without digging too deep into the "stuff" on the shelf, i can't see the tail shaft housing good enough to see if there are any mounts for the lower shifter linkage, or if i'll have to fab up something. does the transmission tunnel need any clearancing, or will just removing part of the tail shaft ribs be enough ? what adapter is needed for the crank ? the engine has an eagle 8 bolt flange if it matters.

You shouldn't need an adapter for the crank, you should be able to use the flexplate you have . Is your trans lock up or non lock up?

I've done this in my '71 D100 and the wife's LRE. Both ran the Power Tour with no problems. There's an overpriced kit with the parts available. I bough adjustable switches (don't remember the p/n), ran a length of hydraulic hose into the cab, and adjusted the switches to shift into OD when it "felt" right before mounting them to the trans.
In a truck, the only mod required was a custom rear trans mount, but the OD unit sits right where the rear mount on the 727 falls, and on a car that's in the middle of the T-bar crossmember, as noted. Make sure your mod to that crossmember is up to the forces involved...

I converted my stock shifter to cable & welded & changed the detents

Little more work and cost, but here's what I did. Completely automatic, wanted my daughter to be able to drive it. The control module automatically turns on/off the overdrive and lock-up for the transmission.
The 518 (46RH) is hydraulically controlled and uses 2 solenoids to enable the OD and LU. The 3-pin connector on the transmission supplies the control voltages. The center pin always has 12V power connected. The 2 outer pins are switched grounds. The front pin is the OD ground, the rear pin is the LU ground.
The module works according to the following sequence. 1) The 12V toggle switch supplies voltage to the relays and transmission center pin. 2) When the hydraulic pressure trips (50mph/adjustable) the pressure switch, ground is supplied to the vacuum switch. When speed is below 50mph, hydraulic switch opens, disabling OD. 3) When there is enough vacuum, the vacuum switch closes, providing the OD relay ground. Under heavy acceleration, vacuum drops, opens switch, OD is disabled. 4) When OD relay has ground and 12V, it waits 10sec, then supplies 12V to the LU relay and ground to the transmission OD pin, enabling OD. 5) Now the LU relay has 12V, it's already grounded. It waits the 10 sec programmable delay then provides ground to the transmission LU pin. So lock up doesn't occur until OD has been enabled and on for 10sec. 6) The programmable delays for both relays fix the situation when speed is fluctuating around 50mph. This would normally cause the OD to kick on/off, the 10 sec (programmable) delay stops this from happening.

On my E body, I dropped the K enough to get the drive shaft angle good. And it only took a few mods to get the vertical shift shaft to work. It is at an angle rather than straight, but has worked fine for years now with the SlapStick.

This is a grsat design and setup. Seems flawless and well thought out. Very nice.

That is a great design. And schematic. If someone wants a fully automated system, that would be the way to go. Much more complicated than necessary, but the way to go.
On my Cuda, I have a simple switch on the console at my fingertips and that same adjustable vacuum switch on the intake. But my wife and kids DO NOT drive the Cuda. With a 540 Hemi, figuring out how to manage the OD would be the least of the issues.

Me or the OP? That has been around for years and has some useful information, but does not directly address the OP's question and is about an A body. The OP has a B. The cross member mods that they had to do may not be required on the OP's B. They weren't on my E.

Yes the x member has to be built & trimmed down in the hump area

thanks for those pictures Charlie ! that gives me a perfect idea of what will need doing, if i decide to go this rout. if i have any chance to get my car running this year, i probably should wait until late in the year to start this, and just get an engine and 727 stuffed in and go so i can have any kind of fun this year. at least i can gather the parts needed in the meantime. don't get old with health problems guys ! it sucks ! What kind of trans mount is that? I bought a conversion cross member and it uses a GM mount, your mount looks nicer.
