Yesterday one of my best friends helped me start modifying a flat hood for my 71 cuda clone. The parts I got included a modified knock of vise grip that is intended to form the recess for the trim ring. We tested it several times on scrap sheets but honestly I do not see how it can possible provide a good result. Instead we decided to use a bead roller sitting on casters and 'steer' the roller around the hood sitting stationary on the 4 post lift. I have zero body work skill...my friend has lots of body work experience, but had never done a shaker conversion before. I think the results are pretty good, the trim ring template we made fits very well. I don't have a real shaker hood to compare the 'profile' of the recess, but it matches the depth and angle of the crimping tool and looks similar to the other images I found online.

Some more pics. We clamped some vise grips on the top of the bead roller to "steer" it around the inside of the hood. It went smoother than I was expecting.

The roller went really smoothly except for right as it came up onto the centerline of the hood in the front, and is going to need a little work.

Nice work! How's it look with the gasket and trim ring sitting in the hood?

The cutout & recess rolled into the hood is centered as close as can be measured from multiple points on both sides... unfortunately the aftermarket trim ring casting center front and center rear body line are not positioned very well at all. The front is off about 1/4 inch to one side, and the rear is off over 1/8 inch to the opposite side. We are going to have to tig weld up both the front and back to try and get the body line centered in the trim ring. I am also a bit disappointed that 1/2 of the studs in the trim ring were bent fairly badly during shipping.

Sorry to hear that. I am looking to add a shaker hood too. I bought one of Harm's "beta" trim rings when he was unloading them. I thought about what you are doing but don't have the skills. I don't see those kits anymore to modify a flat hood. I will probably get an AMD but I didn't want the hood pins. I should have bought it pre 2020 frown

Keep the pics coming though!

I custom made my own to first and clear my tunnel ram and two 1050 Dominator carbs on my Hemi. Stretched the hood opening, base and bubble 3" longer, raised the bubble 4-1/2" taller and opened the nostrils 2-1/2" taller.

Thats like "Frankenshaker" in the making! LOL

I see there are 3 companies that have the shaker hood listed... AMD, Goodmark, and Sherman. I don't know the quality if the last 2 but they don't show hood pins. The Goodmark doesn't show the holes for the shaker trim plate even. The Sherman is the cheapest.
