If it was me I would do it myself , if you have never done one before get yourself a manual, there not hard , but remember cleanliness, and patients, sometimes it takes 4 hands. If you have problems, theres lots of info and help on MOPARTS'''

Take the side cover off and inspect it yourself. You'll know pretty fast if you're going to have a problem by the condition of the second gear teeth.

Or send to a specialty shop (Passon) or the local trans shop?? Tried to talk to a local trans shop for a relative cost quoted $250 to tear down and inspect. the trans is out of a low mileage Charger (17,000 mails) but has been in storage for at least 25+ years Thanks
It's gotta be torn down...
The gaskets and seals will be harder than Chinese arithmetic from sitting that long and the unit will likely leak like a sieve even if it does work fine. Another good reason to reseal it(at the very least), is to take advantage of the new fluids(GM Synchrmesh), which will allow the trans to shift far better than before but is less forgiving than the 80w/90 when it comes to seal integrity.
I have been building these units for more than 25 yrs. NP833's are the easiest of the musclecar era 4 speeds to build. The Muncies,T10's and Toploaders are all a little harder, but not really too bad either. The biggest problem that a novice or first timer has is not getting rhe unit apart and back together, but rather not knowing what to look for when examining the parts for wear and or damage. It may make it into all 4 gears, but may grind, pop out of gear, or any other related problem if you are not aware of what to look for. Pay attention to the clutching teeth on the speed gears, especially 3rd. The brass rings should lay on the cone of the gear with some clearance at the bottom. If the ring bottoms out on the gear, than it's going to grind. Loose hub and sleeve fit and worn clutching teeth will also cause the unit to pop out of gear, especially on decel.
Up until a few years ago, I was scrounging around and beating the bushes for parts for these. Now, the part availability is much better. The only problem now is that the 308 bearings for these are mostly coming from overseas and are lacking in overall metallurgy and quality to the American counterparts.

We will be happy to help you out with any rebuild parts that you need. OR, if you are not confident rebuilding it, we can certainly take care of rebuilding it for you. As for the mileage. That is not always a good indicator of condition. We have had units in here that had 80,000 miles on them and if I had to guess, I would have said that they had 8,000. Vise Versa, we have had units in with 18,000 miles on them that if I had to guess, I would have said 180,000. So, the overall condition of the car is a better indicator I think. Either way, if you have questions, you can certainly contact us. We are here to help.
As for the "offshore" stuff. All I can say, is "just be careful." I have been more than worried with some of the reproduction parts that I have seen for these units that have been coming in from Korea, China, Taiwan.
All of our stuff that we make is MADE IN THE USA. We are PROUD of that too. We are willing to invest the time and money that it takes to make a product that is better than the original and we do it HERE!. We still have some SKF USA Made 308 SG8 bearings left. Jamie

From my experience, the 833 is one of the easiest boxes to rebuild
