I was thinking about getting my new driveshaft powder coated.

Could this throw off the balance?

If anyone has done this, what was the cost?

Thx

I'll say bad , it can potentially throw off the balance and it will have to be ground off to weld on new weights ...

if it's a trailer poodle that will only get driven on and off the trailer to go to the show field then I'd say go for it as it won't be an issue at 2mph ...

I kinda doubt it would affect the balance although it WOULD be a pain if you needed to add weights. If I had a nice new, non pitted driveshaft, I'd just clear coat it myself; it looks correct, yet won't rust. If it truly is a "trailer queen" then a simple coat of WD40 would suffice IMO.

Cheers,
Dave

I honestly don't know how close they balance a drive shaft but I doubt if a few thou of paint is going to make a noticeable difference. On the other hand installing the ujoints afterwards could be an adventure.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I have had customer balance them and then bring them to me to coat. They have never complained of a problem with the balance afterwards.

"Turbo will be easiest, and at the HP level will also be easiest on parts. Spend the money to do it right, and you can build a 500 HP street motor that will live a long and happy life, and probably with a very basic short block." Those words must have left a bad taste in his mouth!

All good points,

No trailer queen, just wanted to keep the rust away.

- Never thought of the clear coat, but wouldn't this be just as heavy as the powder coat.
- I would think the powder coat would be the most uniform since it's an automated process.

Maybe I'll just brush it with some Ospho.
