I have been using Goodyear 31/14.0/15 slicks which have a D-5 (hard) rating. The tires work great but I am starting to notice a little tail wagging on top end so I think the sidewalls are going. I am not particularly happy about this cuz I only have about 50 passes on them and they still have a fair amount of rubber showing in the holes, but at 3550 lbs. and 1.31 60 fts. I guess it is par for the course. I have been running them at 10.0 lbs.
I have been told that Hoosier slicks sidewalls will last longer but that exact size is only available in a soft-D05 compound.
My questions are would running tubes make the sidewalls last longer?
Will the soft compound wear out quicker?
Should I be running more than 10.0 lbs in the Goodyears? Maybe that is why the sidewalls went south?
Thanks Mike

After talking with the Mickey Thompson Tech guy on Monday I had about the same questions as you.
Per his recommendations I'm going to switch to the stiff side wall tire and run tubes.
only difference in our tire size mine are 32's
my car is also on the heavy side @ 3500 with driver.
he also suggested to start the air pressure @ 8 and see if I can work it up to 10 lbs. I'm looking for better 60 ft and of course consistent RT and No spin.

try a little more tire pressure. D5 is a medium I think, not hard.

Quicktree I am going to experiment with more pressure and see what happens. I wish they made my size in a stiff wall! Jeg's lists D05 on page 240 as a Soft compound.
If the soft compound wears out quicker maybe that would match me wearing out the sidewalls!
I would be paying a lot more for tires each year though!
Mike

I'd still consider Tubes for safety reasons since yours are in question.
and if they are a tube type tire they should have tubes anyway.

go to 14.5 x 32 15's....far more popular tire and a lot better compound choices...not to mention cheaper. But in the mean time run tubes...it will help but now its only a band aid.....I ran D-5's for a long time and my ride is 3580 with me on board.

"go to 14.5 x 32 15's "
A little too big for my Mini-tubbed B body!
I know the tubes will only be a band aid if the sidewalls are shot. I think I am just gona order the Hoosiers and be done with the Goodyears.
Thanks Mike

Once again, AIR UP YOUR TIRES, the M/T rep is out of his mind to suggest 8psi on a 3500 lb car he isn't even close. Maybe 12. Your tail wagging is lack of air. Mike
