Anyone have a source for a correct length A body
speedometer cable. The parts store cables are all
too long.

Thanks.

Cable has stayed the same size for years. 68-75 should be the same. Do you have speed control?

Sorry, no I don`t. Did you try taking the old one in with you and match it up with a new one. I don`t see why they are having trouble getting the correct one. You are talking cable and housing correct? Not just the insert. The inserts are cut to length IIRC.

I have bought 2 different cable assemblies and
they are both way too long. I would have a huge
loop on the fender (like 12" or more) if I used
them. I can't imagine this is right.

Maybe I will just make my own

According to the Stewart-Warner catalog, the '68-'76 A body cable without speed control varies between 63.5" and 68.5" with most years being the 68.5".

Napa has the 68" speedo cables (part #BK 6151659) if yours is the clip style. If you need the 66/67 that are threaded on both ends, you can try imperialservices.net , but they cost a lot more.

I am working on tracking one down for my '74 Duster right now. Mine measures out to just over 60". It has the plastic quick clip on the gauge end and a 7/8" nut/cap on the transmission side.

I have hit up about every autoparts store I can find and everything I have found is about 80".

Apparently they are trying to shove a universal cable down our throats.

Napa shows one that they claim is 68", but I have yet to get one. I had my local "Mom and Pop" shop order one for me, it is supposed to show up today. If it doesn't pan out I am just going to order the 68" from Napa and see what it looks like.

I agree with the above post:

Awesome, I called NAPA and they have it!
Whoohoo. I hate the thought of a LONG cable
hanging all over the firewall.

Thank you very much.

You don't hang it all over the firewall you tie wrap the loop under the car somewhere.

The extra length is a waste, I prefer the correct
one as it keeps it all neater if you can find it.
Tie wrapping is fine, but I would like something
closer to original.

Napa does indeed have a 68" one that fits perfect
and it's under 20 bucks. Picked it up last night.

My response was meant only if you couldn't find the cable you needed.

Yes, I know that. It is frustrating that manufacturers are trying to force a standard length
cable onto us. Everyone I looked at stated the oem
size was 80" and I know for a fact mine was original and way shorter. The so called replacement
part from Oriellys even had the wrong end on it,
and the sales guy was shocked I didn't want the part.... Um it won't screw on....so no.

I called my local Napa this morning, my 68" cable should be in tomorrow morning. Lets see how it works out.
