I have a newly restored radio in my 70 Cuda and when the car is in acc with engine off it plays perfect but when the car is running I get a ton of static and only one or two stations. Can anyone give me an idea why.

spark plug wires, steel core wires and AM don't mix

Do you have the condenser on the coil. There is also one on the back of the gage cluster for the voltage limiter.

Well first tell us what the static sounds like.

Is it a musical whine that varies with engine speed?

(Alternator whine)

Is it a rhythmic popping which follows engine speed?

(Ignition noise)

If you have a motor or pulse type electric fuel pump, those can cause a lot of noise.

Heater/ AC/ wiper motors can all make noise, obviously you can isolate them by turning on/ off to find out which

All alternators SHOULD have a condensor / capacitor on the battery feed (output)

Your coil should have a condensor/ capacitor on the POSITIVE post

Try attaching two flexible ground straps at each rear corner of the hood to the firewall, and/ or finding --like at a two way radio shop--used to have little spring clips which you screw to the inner hood channel near the firewall. These have little ridged gizmos which, when you slam the hood, provid additional grounding

Use a good set of resistor (suppressor) spark plug wires

Make sure the radio antenna/ coax is in good shape

Sometimes bonding (ground straps) from the exhaust to the body help

I love my solid core wires especially at a stop light when the guy next to me is losing it because his favorite rap song is getting fuzzed out

I contacted Greg at Classic Car Radio Repair and he agrees that I need a noise reduction condenser that fits on the coil. After six phone calls this m,orning I can find no one that knows what I am talking about. Where would I buy this?

After our phone conversation this morning, I was able to locate one within 60 seconds .
I simply did a google search for "Mopar radio condenser" and I found Frank Mitchell has an NOS one on e-bay right now , for $ 19.95 or something like that (that means you should be able to get one through other sources for about $ 5 ).
