They did catch a bunch of algae, but it didn't backwash the media clean. I may try sand again next year. Hoping the balls would work the same. Easier to get rid of the balls vs 150lbs of sand. Don't really have a place to dump it. Michigan? Wait until it snows and sand the street in front of your house.

There is a fine layer of something in the pool, or at least in spots. I closed the pool yesterday. When I was vacuuming, I could see where the brush cleaned the liner. It was very slight, but I was looking for it. I have never vacuumed to waste, maybe I'll try that next time. Was planning on checking all the seals and gaskets soon and tackling any issues there. The Filterballs were going into a mesh bag and getting washed at the laundry mat. Not getting that gunk in my machine or drains. I probably will run on a wash cycle without soap to see how they turn out first. If that works for the media, I'll do it twice a season since they are not hard to remove and put back in. Way easier than sand to remove. I also read on another board to put a sock over the inlet jet to catch any fine particles. I did that when vacuuming and not sure if it helped or if it was just me hoping it did, but water didn't seem to cloud up as fast. Also read it may be air getting in the system on the suction side. I didn't see any leaks and the filter clear lid didn't show any air bubbles.
