Have a stock 5.9 in a 95 Ram 1500 and need to pull a 7000 pound trailer 1000 miles. Engine is stock. What would be the best bolt on mods for torque? Your thoughts

What gear are you running?? 3.91 will be fine with out anything. 3.55's would get you there and back too but may be a little short if you have to go through mountains..

Best bolt on mod is premium gas, a clean air filter and good plugs. The stock 5.9 should handle 7000 lb OK if the truck chassis is up to it. I pulled 5500 # through the hills of Missouri with a 5.9 Durango with 3.55's - no sweat.

On hills, especially in hot weather, it seems that the knock sensor kicked in on mine and I lost torque. Premium gas prevented it. Probably why it was suggested for towing in the owners manual.

Beyond that, headers and a low restriction exhaust would help some. I would stay away from any of the chips or programmers... not recommended for towing.

Premium gas will not help power a bit if the engine is not designed to run on it. In fact over octaning an engine can reduce power output. Octane slows the burn rate of fuel and is an anti knock agent.

Yeah but when you load down an engine that hard and it's getting good and hot while working hard, it could knock on 87 octane the computer will pull timing, which is the last thing you need.

on my '96, a cat-back exhaust system really woke it up. the major difference between the '94-97 230HP 360 and the '98-up 245 is the exhaust system.

The easiest bolt on I did w/ my 5.2 Dakota was the MP computer. Hands down adds 30hp and torque. Like all the others said, fresh tune up and you should be good. Only thing w/ the computer is you will have to run at least 91 octane or it will ping!

and the MP computer is not recommended for towing (I had one on my truck, too).
