This was a long time ago, mid 80's, here in central Florida, I got a job managing a smallish auto parts store, at the time I took the job the place had been managed almost into the ground ...
anyways, after a while business picked up enough warrant a delivery vehicle, so they gave me a former exec company car, a 1980 Ford LTD. The usual early eighties ford problem, power windows that didn't work, doors that wouldn't open from outside, other stuff that they didn't want to fix because the exec was getting a new car, so why bother? BUT, the a/c did work!
After about a year of this, they got me a NEW delivery truck! A new, left over,Mazda, automatic, I Think it had a radio ... black in color
And, no a/c
the theory was if it had a/c the driver would be too tempted to sit in the air conditioned truck, and not be making deliveries ... as a "fringe benefit" I got to drive the truck home at night ...

My new job is doing just that. It's ridiculous. For some strange reason, as the oldest (aged) delivery person, they gave me the biggest vehicle of the fleet - a 2008 F250. It had NO A/C. Then it's engine blew up, so we got another loaner F250, but this new one was a 2011 WITH A/C and I loved it. But then for some even stranger reason, we got ANOTHER loaner truck and it has A/C but it does not work. And the week before this heatwave started, my boss took the one with working A/C back. I was not happy.
The rest of our fleet is two 2011 Toyota Yaris' and neither has A/C. The newest in the fleet is a 2018 Hyundai Venue, and it DOES have A/C....and on Saturday's I get to use it, but the rest of the week one of the other kids gets it. The last two/three weeks have been murder on me.
Today however, was my first real day on counter inside the air-conditioned building. That was wonderful but.... I'm not 100% sure I like it. It's ok I guess but I dislike jobs where one minute it's busy A.F., and then you're standing around for the next 2 hours. I'd rather be doing something steady.

Yesterday someone was off ,the dispatcher told me take the honda fit today it's got ac though I'm not crazy about these cars it was surprising roomy, alittle low on power but it worked out fine.I like trucks better but the Nissan pickup I used a few days ago had no ac so I was grateful they let me use the fit.

Years ago I took on a job at the local NAPA store delivering parts. The store owner was always a jerk, but most of the time he was hiding back in the office doing whatever he did. The store manager did a pretty good job of keeping the owner away from the help, and could usually make or keep peace with the employees. When ever the owner walking into the building, it was like the cloud of doom came in with him, everyone got pretty tense, but when he went back into the office, or left the store, the cloud of doom followed him. The store was a pretty decent place to work when the owner wasn't around. It didn't take long working there to understand how things worked, and we sort of ignored the boss's rants.
I'd been there about 3 months, but was a customer before that, and I also worked at a shop they delivered to. I knew the owner on a personal level, he was pretty decent to the customers.
The store had delivery 3 routes that they did one route every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Those was usually around a 120 mile trip, and took about 4 hours. The store had 3 delivery drivers, one of which would be doing the route deliveries and the other two did the daily local stuff. I Often did the delivery routes because they took about the number of hours I worked per day, so when I got done with the route, my day was about over. I had just walked in the door from finishing one of the delivery routes, and both the other trucks were out making local deliveries. The manager asked me if I would make that one run before I left for the day. He had just handed me the parts and I was turning around to head out the door.
The owner had just walked in and started screaming at me, face to face, about standing around and not making any deliveries when his customers were waiting for their parts. The manager was trying to tell him the other trucks were both out and I had just walked in from making the route deliveries and that I had offered to take those parts to the customer even though I was really off work. The owner really lost it, and started poking me in the chest with his finger and calling me nasty names. Things were getting out of hand fast. About a minute into his rant and finger poking, I slipped the key ring for the truck onto his finger. Suddenly he was pretty dumbfounded and silent, then I handed him the parts from my other hand. and politely told him deliver his dam parts himself because I was going home, and walked out.
i went back the next day to see if I still had a job. The manager told me I did if I wanted it. Pretty much the whole crew was laughing, they told me the owner actually did do that delivery, the manager had to tell him where the shop was and told him he really did need to make that delivery. They said when he got back, he was really friendly to everyone as he walked back into his office. I decided that I really didn't want to work there after that, but I was still a customer. Any time the owner saw me after the experience, he was always really friendly to me. Even to this day, I don't think I could deliver auto parts for any parts house, that experience from 30 years ago still lingers. To be honest, I really don't know why I didn't smack him that day.

Forget that, I get wanting to be on your own most of the time and collect a paycheck. If its a driving job I'd look at car auction delivery driver or airport hotel shuttle driver instead. Airport shuttle you can do night shift, bonus if you need time away from the mrs for mental health reasons.

I considered it for a few extra bucks for racing now that I am retired but I looked up reviews on the local chain parts stores for driver jobs and they get pretty poor ratings , the pay is low and the turnover rate is high. I instead work for an excavating/landscaping company very close to my house ( about ten minutes ). He calls me when he needs me: sometimes just a few hours a week sometimes up to 25 hours a week, I pickup materials for jobs at vendors and deliver them to the job sites, do a little mechanical work, move his small excavators and Bobcat around . Most of the time I drive a mid size International roll back or one of his F350 mason dumps. Most of the jobs are within a 25 mile radius but there are a few over an hour and a half away. He pays me pretty well , appreciates me and I enjoy the work

VWell that's very cool!So far this place and everyone seem very nice and helpful. All of us that deliver parts are retired and pretty laid back like to hang out while waiting for parts to deliver. We have cell phones if we need to contact the NAPA store it's cool seems more like a garage/shop atmosphere. Magement supplies snacks and the refrigerators always has bottled water so far I'm glad I work for them.

That's a great idea! The news said this was the longest heatwave since 1931 when they started keeping records.
