actually i think it is textured, i think it is textured black on a rallye car or texured argent on a non rallye car. you might get a second opinion

I believe it is different for a 72 than it is for a 73-74. In 72 the Rallye was its own model. If you got a Rallye, the VIN would start with JS23. All other Challengers were JH23. In 73-74 all Challengers had a VIN that started with JH23 and the Rallye was a package added to the base Challenger.

If you got a Rallye in 72...the tail panel should be painted with "organisol." That is a slightly textured black paint that was also used on the T/A hoods.

In 73-4 the tail panel should be med/dark argent witch is a heavy textured paint. In those years the inner sections of the tailpanel(right around the lenses) should be painted with black organisol paint.

The argent paint is textured. The outer face of the housing is painted, and the lens coves are smooth black. I'm not sure about the black on the rallye cars.

We had a big post on this a few months ago in the "restoration" forum. No one could agree 100% but the general feeling is what I stated above.

My dads 73 is a Rallye that has the argent tail panel with the organisol inserts. He bought the car new so I know that the argent is correct for a 73 Rallye.

Other literature states that the Rallyes got a blacked out tail panel and there are pictures of origonal 72's that have the organisol panel.

My feeling is that the blacked out panel was for 72 Rallye's only. I think that sinse in 73 the Rallye was just an option group instead of its own model, the tail panels were painted the same as a 72 NON Rallye car.

Here is a picture I have posted before of my dads 73 Rallye.

If your VIN is JS23 then you have a Rallye. The tail panel should be the slightly textured black organisol. Are the recessed areas around the lenses black too or are they argent?

I think Totally Auto sells it in a spray can if you need some. I have heard there paints arn't 100% correct but they work good on your standard resto.

Question, are you making a distinction between the tail and brake light housing area (i.e. the recessed bezel area that surrounds the actual tail/brake lights?) or, are you asking about the entire tail panel?

Was the 72 Rallye tailpanel all one color(organisol) or were the recessed areas around the tail light lenses silver? I've seen it both ways.

They were in "most" instance two-tone. In otherwords, they were either a silver tailpanel with black bezel surrounding the tail lights or black tail panel with silver bezels surrounding the lights. Perhaps some were produced that were all one color in '72. I am not familar with this.

The Rallye's typically had the black grills unlike the non-rallye's which came with a silver or argent finished grill. The talipanels appear to be somewhat less consistent.
