I found the original 383 block for my 69 Superbee. I feel it was just plain luck, the person I got the car from mentioned the name of a guy I knew and said that who I believe was the second owner looked at the car when it was for sale a few years earlier and said that he still had the original engine from when he pulled it to swap it for a 440 . 25 bucks for a crusty block that was sitting on a piece of cardboard in a dirt floor basement.
You need to trace back owners , can you get a hold of whom you got it from and go back from there ?

Been looking for the 340 out of my 69 GTS convertible since 1995, only came close. I think the problem is that I bought the car in Indianapolis, and Indy Cylinder Head bought up all the 340's they could put their hands on in the 80's and 90's and made them into race engines, so I am sure mine got blowed up somewhere along the line... 306021 is still out there hopefully...

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

Talk to your DMV. Some states will send an inquiry to the previous owner of record on your behalf. If your state does this, at least you have an option. No guarantees, even if the DMV sends a letter, the previous owner is under no obligation to reply. And as the cars age, so do the owners, many are not with us any more. But it may be another option to consider.

locating the original engine and/or transmission for your car? I'd like to find the original 340 and 4-speed transmission for my car if possible but other than posting an ad in the lost and found I don't know where to look. Also, I have no idea where my car was originally from. Posting the number your looking for in the form of a looking for original XXX engine and XXX trans for year, make, and Vin stampings might just flush it out. Example: i have a 340 in my 38 Ford that I pulled out of a 72 340 4spd cuda. The car I pulled it from was restored and in Morgan hill ca. back in 1994. I'm not even sure the motor was original to that car but the next time I have it on the rack I'm going to get the numbers and google them to see if anyone's looking for it. My point is if you added the numbers to this post and some one google's it, it should pop up, Long shot but when looking for a needle in a haystack

I am an eternal optimist on this subject. The odds of a successful reunion are 50/50......... Think about it....... either you will, or you will not! If you do not try, then the odds are very slim. I have quite a bit of experience in this area. Since starting The Challenger T/A Registry over two decades ago, the overall endeavor started to include AAR Cuda's. Then it evolved again to include ALL 1970 Hamtramck built cars. Another evolution was started for the 1970 LA built cars. In my lifetime at this point I have personally either mailed out or personally delivered broadcast sheets, other related paperwork 442 items so far. There was also a 340 block for a 1972 Road Runner. I left it with the owner's wife because he was at work, but that was well before I started any registries. I have not counted what I call 'assists'. Hundreds of people have sent in paper items & fender tags for cars they have found, but of course no one is going to send in an engine or transmission. But there have been a lot of registry members that I have been able to put in touch with the person that had reported one, the other, or both for their car. On several of those occasions, successful deals were made. A year or two ago, three T/As got their original engines back in one month! It always feels great when it happens. Best of luck with your search.

Sometimes you get lucky. Many years ago a good friend bought a 64 dual quad 409 Impala that he remembered from his youth. The engine was long gone and had been replaced with a 283. We hunted for a correct engine for a year. We did not even consider the possibility of finding the original engine. Some one told us about seeing a 409 at a farm about 25 miles away. We went to the farm and asked about it. The farmer said we could have it and told us where to find it. We walked clear back to the back of the farm and found a 409 block sitting on top of a pile of gravel. The heads were on the back seat of a junk car and the dual quad intake and air cleaner were in the trunk beside a box of rods, pistons and assorted small parts. The farmer carried the block and heads with his backhoe and we carried the rest by hand during a thunder storm, walking through the muck. Yes, we were young and dumb. After we got it home and cleaned up we started wondering we're this engine came from because all the numbers looked right and there were very few around back in the day. My friend called the farmer and asked if he knew were it came from. Turned out he got it from the original owner of my friends car,. Amazingly all of the parts cleaned up well enough to do a stock bore rebuild on it and he drove that car for several years.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.
