Smokey's garage was just a couple blocks down the road from the Chrysler Plymouth dealership I worked at. That car probably came from there, it had been there for two forevers. Petty even worked on his cars there back in the sixties when they were in Daytona and the dealership was an associate sponsor. It was called Patterson Motors back then.
Oh and all those carbureted Omni/Horizons in Florida were hot vapor cars laugh2

Soon, the number of people formally trained in the thermodynamics of Carnot heat engines, who could tackle drawing the temperature/entrophy graph of Smokie’s hot vapor engine mods, will be vanishingly small, like the veterans of D-Day on TV yesterday.

Gotta erase this from my thoughts,
or I will feel sad all day.

On the other hand a new crop of graduate students are being routinely assigned each year to draw the T/S graphs of the region around “Black Holes” in space, and it is doubtful a single correct one has been drawn yet.

It's an interesting topic and thank you for sharing but those videos are hard to watch. The fast moving camera over everything was the last straw at 1 minute in.

I went go kart racing with the "kids" from work at Christmas. Some of them race short tracks around here and consider themselves fairly knowledgeable about racing. I mentioned Smokey and none of them had heard of him. I pointed them to The Google and told them to learn a thing or two. The next day in the office that was all they wanted to talk about. That history is slowly disappearing.

Always wondered where Patterson was - thanks, Guitar.
I saw Smokey's shop many years ago when he was still alive, but didn't have the nerve to annoy him.
Met him a couple times at the PRI show and chatted briefly; fascinating guy and not to be trifled with.
His autobiography is likewise fascinating, with some amazing stories of his exploits in WW2.
Lots of smuggling and unflattering activity went on in the Pacific Theatre...
