Hello all. My '70 Hemi RR had no tach in the dash that came in the car. The car was purchased as a rolling shell from R&R salvage, a big Mopar collector/yard back in the 80's-90's. The dash could have easily been swapped out before I got it. I had no build sheet, only the fender tag. With that said, I did not put a tach in the car. Everyone who sees it is in disbelief that a Hemicar would not have a tach... I tend to agree. Any thoughts? If others have seen '70 Hemicars with no tach then I will probably put a period correct tach on the column. If not then I'll correct the mistake and add the option.

You probably don't see it because others have added the tach during their restorations.
It was an option.
I think some original buyers knew they were going put an aftermarket tach in that was more accurate then the factory one for the same or less money. Same for steel wheels. And some Hemi cars that were optional with fresh air hood that didn't really add much performance, but added costs and weight.
And like many Hemi Cuda and AAR don't have tach because they were not optioned with Rallye gauges.
426runnner, I your car a post/sedan or have very few options?

I recall at the time that factory tachs were notoriously inaccurate - and I've proved it myself. Most guys just added an aftermarket tach, which could also be placed in a more visible location for when things got serious. I've never seen the B-body OEM tach called out on the FT. My blue Hemi RR coupe came w/o a tach - no radio or other options, either; just whatever it took to order a Hemi 4-speed car. Original owner was a USAF airman who raced the car & added gauges. The black coupe had a radio, but no tach or other options, and was also raced. IMHO, the no tach fits with the "all business" stripper hemi car mystic. Especially on a Road Runner coupe (post) car... The lowest price car available to get the Hemi.

HT with minimal options. No hood paint, no dust trail, even (rear) stripe delete. No PS. Only options I can think of besides Super Track Pack are hood pins and tinted windshield. I much prefer the idea of aftermarket tach on the column!!

I much prefer the idea of aftermarket tach on the column!! Having a blank off in the tach spot would be more fitting. A rite of passage. That car is ALL business! I think showing it without the vintage aftermarket tach would be cool too. The more sparse the better. Neat car!

For sure if it's Lynch Road Assembly then you will not see a tach or many other "accessories" on a Lynch Road fender tag.

I've told the story of how in early '69 I got to use a friend's '68 bare bones Hemi Road Runner that he ordered with only the Hemi engine and a column 727. Rubber floor mats, no radio, RM21 coupe, no hood blackout, NOTHING right down to when I got on it and looked in the rear view mirror there was only ONE right side tire mark on the road. I asked why was that and he said he got it with the standard rear an 8-3/4, 3.23 OPEN rear.....I never thought it would come like that but you can check that it's the way they came if you didn't order a performance axle package. He intended to drag race it and had a 4.56 or something for it at his shop.

Do you have a picture of the firewall pre restoration , that will give you somewhat of a hint if it had one or not. What plant was the car built at ?
running up my post count some more .

Here's my LA assembly plant '69 GTX fender tag and yes N85 TACHOMETER in on the fender tag. Lynch Road no tach or most other things that are not necessary in Body in White or Paint will NOT be on the fender tag.

The tach should be called out on the fender tag because it required a hole punched in the firewall. It would be there to tell the guys in the sheet metal shop to punch the hole in the firewall.

Go up to my post with my LA "E" assembly plant '69 GTX fender tag and the tach code N85 is on there, that makes the St. Louis, Hamtramck and the LA fender tags showing the tach on them.

Lot of Hemi Cars built without a Tach.. Hemi was enough money and lots could not afford anymore options and really who wants that piece of crap tach in the dash that could be 2 grand under on the gauge when it shows 6400 on the motor is at 8400. Add option, more payments and an aftermarket Tach is more accurate, aftermarket wheels were way more cooler to make your ride your own back when new. Options meant weight, weight meant slower car. One reason I like those shoe box 66s no options, Hemi Four Speed Dana what else did you need anyways.
