bawling I honestly hate progress, sad to see it go. My local track, Rt. 66 dragway has been shuttered for almost a decade now, feels like anyway. I was at Wild Horse when Antron lost a wheel and killed a spectator, I was luckily on the other side of the track at the time, saw the wheel go over the stands and thought everything would be ok, I was wrong. angel Hopefully they will build another one somewhere in the Phoenix area, bring back Beeline! There is nothing there now, but you can still see where it used to bee... luck

I was at that race and it happened right in front of me. Was horrible.

I remember seeing Don Garlits go off the left side of that track after the finish line into a bunch of standing water and tearing up that car some, maybe doing several slow roll overs in the water puddles, the week before the Winternationals that year, maybe 1980/1982 era. He had repaired it and had it running for the Winternationals the next week, but I don't think he qualified it, maybe he did confused
I also remember seeing Gordie Bonin wreck his funny car at the Winternationals crashing it into the west side guard rail and then rolling it sideways on the guardrail a bunch of time shedding the body, motor, rear end and the fuel and oil tanks. It stop right side up, once it stop rolling he unbelted and ran up into the west side grand stands very fast up He never ls lost sight of what to do to survive that crash bow up

That sucks - begs the question: did they sell out, and was there an alternative ?
It's irritating to me that they're selling the event as a celebration instead of the bummer it really is to AZ racers.
Last I heard about Beeline, it's never coming back. Hope that's wrong.

Casinos are more profitable than dragstrips.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

This /\

RT 66 has a Divisional scheduled this year. It's listed as a collaboration between a private track rental and the NHRA. I too hope they get it open again soon.

No way speedworld would ever happen despite it still being there. Lots of developments popping up out near there now.

They going to drain that lake adjacent to the race way as well? This sounds like a real estate scam and just an excuse for more home or casino development.

So sad! This issue of tracks being closed requires a solution, similar to what happened to a Veterans rest camp in Minnesota. The camp was donated to vets with PTSD as we know it today, just after WW1. But the county and state wanted that beautiful 600 acre lakefront property for their own use. The county tried to regulate and/or tax them out of existance to get the land.
The solution was a bill passed in the US congress to make it forever untouchable, similar to a national park. Somewhere close to Pheonix there has to be a chunk of desert big enough for a multi use facility that could be established, and untouchable for ever. Time to contact some senaters and congressman.

The proposed map is shown on this page. No highway, but a theme park, offices, entertainment venues, and hotels.

This has been on the works for a couple of years. They put the master plan out almost two years ago. So not as surprise. Despite what the story states about I10 being the reason the real reason is the development of the Indian land where the track is located. Multi use retail, gaming, office space and entertainment area. No secret the tribe has been heading that way for years. Unfortunately there is likely no track on the horizon in AZ at all. As Jay said forget about Speedworld ever seeing the light of day, it was never coming back after the county closed it down anyway
