I wish I had friends like that. But seriously, you may want to join one of the home machinist forums. I'm confident your question about tooling won't be the only one that you'll have.

one thing i can't stress enough, get a GOOD vice that will keep your work clamped TIGHT. more than one project has been scrapped, as well as has caused broken tooling, because the vice or work piece hold downs became loose. this is also a safety issue as well. the more ridged the machine, which also includes the pad the machine sets on, the more precise your machining will be. a mill is a great addition to any shop. you won't regret spending money on quality tooling for it.

Go to YouTube. Find Tubalcain. Watch his videos. Mr Pete knows his stuff and does a great job teaching the basics.

one thing i can't stress enough, get a GOOD vice So I found a Kurt 5" vise with soft and hard jaws for $250. Worth getting? i have a 40 year old 6" Enco (now MSC) Vise that is starting to show some age. but the limited use it sees it's fine. The Kurt is the Cadillac and MAY BE a decent buy if it's not worn out. I would encourage you to get the biggest one the mill will handle. BTW Shars is the current ENCO. Enco was bought by MSC as they couldn't compete so buy them and raise the prices.

one thing i can't stress enough, get a GOOD vice So I found a Kurt 5" vise with soft and hard jaws for $250. Worth getting? as already said, Kurt is the Vice of Vices ! [not THAT kind of vice ! ] be sure to look it over closely. and if it shows signs of repeatedly milling or drilling into it, leave it there ! one pet peeve of mine is someone hacking up a vice or fixture by carelessly crashing the cutting tool into it ! for starters, as has also been said, get the biggest vice you can afford. however, small vices are also useful. if possible, get vices with replaceable jaws. that allows one to have a selection of jaws you can choose from, depending on the work you are doing. jaws can come, or be made from, aluminum, plastic, brass, soft copper, etc. air vices are also available, and can come in handy in production work, as well as being fast to adjust to different widths of your work piece.

I have to comment that my above came from working at Intel many years ago. It was the early 80's and things were SLOW. The previous shift had done a shop clean up labeling cabinets drawer's etc. One was labeled VICE'S Being the person I am, I just had to Label the blank one next to it VIRTUE'S. It was several days before a memo from management wanted to know who was responsible. No one knew anything LMAO Then there was the employee suggestion box they placed on a steel column just above an open trash can. Again took them a couple of week to figure out someone had removed the bottom of the box I can't claim that one LOL. Again, no one knew anything yet the area was functioning 24 hours 7 days a week.
