leave that 484 on the shelf..it will run like poo poo in that 400. On the cheap I'd order one of the summit cams (depends on gear stall), mill the head a little (don't forget to do the intake too) use a steel shim head gasket and call it a day.

make a quick search and will find lot of info about... in lot of ppl opinion the MP 484 cam is too much cam for a Low Comp 400, even changing the torque converter.

If you want to know my 400 built will be MP 474 cam ( the step lower ) BUT with KB240 pistons what are higher to raise up compression. will use metallick headgasket, and will try to mill down about .040 the heads ( 452s ). beside that, porting heads with MP templates. Also changed to 166K MP convertor. will mount the basic eddy performer intake. Double timming chaing from summit. Also some Hughes valve springs

Even with that combo lot of ppl still think I'm, overcammed, so take your conclusions.

Another option that does look to be a good agreement is use Engle cams with less duration but higher lift ( new school ). I like a lot the K56-K58 Cam combo for intake/exhaust.

Of course I'm just telling you about what I have read because is my first step on Performance world. There are a lot of cams to choose. I have one more that I like but I can't find righty now the one. I saved somewhere the PN and brand.

I wanted by now just keep my Mopar all Mopar as posible, thats why I picked up the 474 cam, what does look to be the borderline between decent street use and strip in performance world.

Mill down and pushrods... of course needs to be revised. I will mount rocker shafts shims ( 030 ones )sold by Mancini. That and the hidrauilic lifters will drive the approximatelly 040 or so mill down job.

Once again wait for the experts. BUT TAKE CARE there are LOT OF DIFFERENT opinions between them.

It also has a lot to do with the rest of your set-up and what you want the car to do. If you're not going to race it, if you're going to run exhaust manis and stock intake, you might as well use Summit or Jegs brand parts.

Whats your setup? It sounds like its going to be mismatched. How much are you looking to spend? Your cheapest way to fix your problem is to probably buy another cam. The summit cam may work well for you because it will be cheap, i'd bet it outperforms the 484 unless youve got 4.10s and a higher stall converter.

I think the MoPar 272/272 or the Engle K56/K58 are both great cams for going above stock but nothing crazy.

70 rr,3.91 gears,29" tyre,3000 stall, headers, edelbrock rpm intake,750 cfm holley.plus the cam i listed above.its not gonna be a permanent engine as it will eventually get replace with a 440 source combo down the road so a lil soft on the bottom end is no biggie i just wanna get the comp up slightly and drive it.thanks for any info...

Well you've got some gear and converter there, I say run it and just run it advanced. Your carb is a good match for it, RPM intake is great, it will have great upper end pull. Advance it 2-4 degrees, and mill your heads as much as you can. Dont mill the intake mill the intake surface of the heads so the intake can be used with anything else.

You could always used Rhoads lifters as well to regain some low end. If you install it on a 104 or 106 centerline I think it will be fine, a tad soft down low but doable and lots of pull up top. If you're not running it at the track and have street tires the soft bottom end might help out a little, less tire spin.

spend the $80 on the larger Summit cam. It will run way better than the 484 w/ that compression. I had a 9:1 400 w/ the 484 it sucked. I replaced it w/ the 488 summit cam and what a difference. I had a 175K MP convert and 3.91's

I wouldn't go over .030 and use stock push rods.

If you could find a set of 516 heads they would (should) be cheaper than milling those heads deck and intake faces and will net you more compression. Then sell your heads for a few bucks and come out farther ahead. Also if you get some 516 heads you won't need different pushrods like you would with very much milling.

Then the 484 cam will work better but if you don't have that cam all ready there are way better cams available for your combo. A comp XE262 or similar spec Lunati voo-doo cam will cost about the same and run way better

Take a look at the Doug Herbert cam, P/N HERCD2N. It's specs are adv dur in/exh 265/275, 244/244 @.050 (typo ?), .510 lift in/exh, 1000-5000 rpm range. Seems like it would be a good match for a low comp 400, short duration and high lift. The .050 #'s seem awfully agressive though, maybe a typo? Anyone out there run one of these? I have my own 78 400HP that I'm doing for a similar build and plan on giving this cam a try. Cheap to at $69.99 for cam only.

Here is what I did in a very stock 383 that used to be in my boys Dart. It was a stock bore & piston 383. I used open chamber 452 heads and milled them .060 so that with the .020 steel head gasket it had 9.5 comp. I used the MP .484 cam on a 104 centerline and had the RPM intake with a 750 DP. I used rockershaft shims from Mancicni that worked fine as I set the lifter preload at .020 with them and the stock pushrods. This was in a 72 Dart that weighed almost 3600 lbs with my son in the car. It had 3.91's with a 26" rear tire and a Turbo Action 3000 stall 10" converter. We put G/60-15 McCreary's on it and ran a best of 12.31 @ 110. For a mild 383 it would scoot. And the .484 cam worked great with it set at 104 and 9.5 comp. Ron

It's not really economical to mill heads enough to make a large enough difference to be worthwhile. If you want to get the comp up, you need to mill the heads like .10-.12". That's a ton of milling and requires shorter pushrods and milling of the intake face, even then the valley tray won't want to fit right, etc. Just creates a lot of headaches and for the money you spent you could have just bought new KB hyper pistons and done a build around a decent compression ratio.

Honestly NO WAY! MP stock resto HP cam is close to that. I would preffer keep it Mopar.

doesn't say about the centerline thought

By the specs and about I have learnt here and there ( not by experience of course ) THIS sounds like a good option:

this crower

or a comp XE262 or lunati voodoo 60302 would be my choices for cam for a stock long block 400. I'd probably use comp #911 springs.
