I now have an alternater that keeps my HEAVY 42 LB battery charged at all times. I want a lithium ion battery that will save weight. Looking at a 12v 60 ah 16.5 lb Dakota Lithium Ion battery, $359 with 10 amp charger included. Is this battery adaquite, decent price? What else is out there?

GoLithium battery is Alternator friendly. Only weighs 8lbs and can literally be mounted anywhere. Call them they are easy to talk with

the new issue of Mopar Action had a blurb on the XS Power XV2400 lithium battery that is rated at 1000 cranking amps and weighs 7lb 6oz.
i did a quick look on the bag, and they were pretty reasonable as to price, but didn't include a charger.
when [if ?] i get around to fire my junk, i might seriously consider one of those batteries because i can keep it up front and save extra weight needed to run cables to the trunk.

Just an FYI on Lithium charging. I have not bought or used any for an automobile, but I have RC raced with them for 20 years. Word of warning, if the battery does not have an overcharge circuit to stop accepting a charge once it is fully charged, bad things can happen.

They require an intelligent charger that uses CC/CV with a cutoff when fully charged. If not, they first start to balloon in size, and then they go nuclear. I have seen it first hand in the RC world, and anything within 5-6ft gets totally torched.

Nothing to mess around with. And a normal extinguisher is barely effective. I just don't know how you don't over charge it in a vehicle with an alternator, but I am guessing they may have figured that out by now.....I just have not looked into it.

I went with XS AGM style batteries. D3400, 42lbs, if I remember right....Its a beast. My default has been the little red tops at 31lbs.

Lithiums do require specific chargers and most are NOT alternator friendly as the max voltage input is usually well below what a normal alternator puts out. You can buy alternators with adjustable regulators but not cheaply. Just something to be aware of. FYI all the Lithium auto batteries come with intelligent chargers so as to not over charge. Also they need t be maintained when sitting cannot simply leave them alone and expect them to live. We have run lithium batteries for 5 years and counting.

Thanks on the heads-up about battery problems.
Al, what do you use for battery's, and how do you keep them charged? I will be running an injector with a primer plus system on gas, but am concerned about all the starts and stops in the lanes, alternates voltage to a lithium battery, etc. Don't want to burn the car up!

Greg I tried Lithium Pro in the beginning and had many issues keeping them happy. An expensive mistake. We went to GoLithium and have had no issues since. We use a House of Payne adjustable 16V alternator with them. Max voltage for charging their batteries is 17.75 volts a typical 16V alternator will put out 19 volts charging. This is straight from Go Lithiums site

Can I use my Go Lithium Battery with an alternator?

Yes. If you have a 16 volt alternator equipped vehicle this will pose no problems with our battery.
*Alternator output should be regulated @ 17.75 volts and 100 amps.

They also told me that if your alternator puts out over 100 amps that you should run two batteries. The company is located up north here by me. Very good company to deal with

Dakota Lithium has a 1000Cca, 60ah start/deep cycle battery and 10 amp charger for $600 that appears to fill the bill. 16.5 pounds and group 24 size. So a call to Dakota for info on it's ability to survive in a race car is in order. Anybody tried this one?

I have some questions for those that use the Go Lithium batteries.
We bracket race and NSS index race at multi day events mostly.
What is your charging routine like?
Do you float charge them and maintain them between races?
What do you do at a multi day event? Float over night? just charge during the event? Is the charger they sell a smart charger that changes over to float/maintain?
I have been looking at these but I have not found enough people using them the way I would use them to ask questions.

I run an alternator on my Dart with the Go Lithium battery. Holley Efi, run headlights, interior lights, etc if I race at night. Starting and stopping it in staging several times. I put the charger on it when I get back to the pits and usually in 15 minutes it's charged fully. Then in the morning I'll throw the charger on it for a bit after warming the car up. Definitely get their charger. One thing is do not let them fully discharge, bad, bad, bad. The customer support is awesome.

Being an NHRA racer all of our stuff is multi day. We just charge the battery after every pass and after warm up in the morning. Dont worry about it overnight. You just need to leave the charger on it if it sits for long periods of time. We have it on the charger between races but for my that can be a couple of months for NHRA stuff. My son only bracket races and has the same routine. If it will sit the charger stays on it. He learned the hard was last year but not maintaining the battery. But Go Lithium fixed it for him after he let it go.

Since the Dakota 60 ah cranking battery looks like a good fit for me, I ordered one. Best reserve capacity for price, includes charger, works with my denso alternater . The 60 ah can accept the output of the sensor 60 amp alternator. Wish me luck😁

I'm very satisfied with the AntiGravity ATX 20. It survived Drag Week. A good lithium battery like this that is designed to be used with an alternator is not just cells. It has electronics built into it manage the battery and regulate the charge. It also shuts off the battery if it gets too low on charge. The ATX20 weighs 4.5 lbs and cranks my 13.5 to 1 hemi over like the plugs are out of it. When it quit working after 4 years, they gave me a 40% credit on a new one.

I have the AntiGravity ATX30, like you very pleased with its performance. That said, I’m still nervous of lithium battery’s & never put the battery on charge unattended.

Me too. I think that's why mine died after only 4 years, because I didn't charge it enough during the extended periods of non-usage.

Here is what anti-gravity says:

Battery Management System (BMS)*. Our built-in BMS Circuitry keeps the battery in the optimal operating range for the longest life. Additionally the BMS protects the battery from Overcharge, Overdischarge, and has Thermal and Short-Circuit protections for the safest operation possible.
