I have two big blocks cranks in my possession, both for a 383. How can I tell if either or neither is a forged and not a cast crank?

Very easy...

Cast have a narrow parting line and forged have a wide one, on the crank throws.

Basically like this pic. Cast on the left.

Tap it with a hammer, if it rings, its forged...if doesn't (just goes clunk), its cast.

drop it from about 2 stories high onto some hard surface like a concrete floor.

If it shatters its cast. if it just bends or gets dented its forged.

In all honesty, I think the forged one will dent the concrete.

Get the scoop in the mail.

71 383 2 bbls were cast crank. I owned one last year. It was the only big block I've seen that I thought was completely useless.

Yeah .....and I saw a flying-saucer last nite !

POST a pic of that parts page or an "official" link .....

And if I am UNcorrect .... you guys can "fight-over" who ever gets the scoop !

And I would STILL like to hear the logic of offering two diff low-po motors with two diff cranks ...

Maybe the flying saucer hit you in the head or they stole your... nevermind...

Jeff posted the page as I can't export it from the program I use to view it.

checkmate!

Logic? 383 lo po and the 400 use the same crank, no?

The logic may go something like this, they knew they were switching to all cast cranks but they had to use up their remaining forged cranks so they just divided them up and said "cast crank, 2bbls forged cranks 4bbls".

B U T ... they kept using the forged cranks in the 400 for a long time past when the 383 was dropped.

OK ...you guys with all the lists and data ....

what was the OEM weight diff between a 383 and 400 piston? ... I am thinking that back-then there was little to no weight-diff between the two pistons. T H E N ... why not use-up those forged 383 cranks in the 400's ?

Whatcha' wanna BET that they used them up that way ? .... (or should have!)

NO SCOOP this time !

I guess the posted parts info, and first hand witness accounts aren't enough for this guy.

In all honesty, I had never seen one till last year myself. BUT they are real.

As for the logic...since when does logic have anything to do with what the big 3 do?

Sorry you found out you were wrong

And to "wreck" a perfectly good part ... from a junk-yard parts-trans that you will never use for anything else ....

You give double - DUH new meaning !

You backed out of your original bet, seems like a scam to me. One shouldn't make claims, backing them up with an offer if one is not willing to fulfill the offer.
You got called out, and to save face you are fulfilling the offer. Wonderful you. I'll retract my statement if you apologize here to the winner, and stop whining because you don't know everything.

Another Keyboard-Commmando !

WHERE did I back-off of this "bet"? ... I simply asked for proof that this was not simply hear-say. Ozzie supplied this .... THERE was no backing-off ... ever.

And AGAIN .... one could argue that there was no "official" bet since there was nothing put-up by the other side(had I been correct) .... but I will not go-there.

I will NOT apologize because there is reason to do so. I will honor my side of this one-sided wager.

But a retraction from YOU is in-order.

Me know everything ? ... I am on-here all the time asking questions ..... so THIS statement from you is pure BS.

So ...an apology from you is in-order.

....Ozzie ... would you like so caramel corn ?

...

...and gets "egg" all over his face ... when he trys to smear me. A N D it is happening toooooo ...when he goes after others !!

I used to own a '71 Challenger convertible lime green, white top, numbers matching 383 2 bl, slpastick. Had to rebuild the trans and get a new converter. I remember having to get the weighted converter for the cast crank. Wasn't the numbers matching trans but I can't see why someone would change to a cast crank when changing the trans and converter. Still kick myself for selling that car too.

Oh jeez, the guy is going to honor the bet so I don't see the problem. It has no effect on any of you guys whining about it anyway, I don't see Oz complaining about anything and isn't it he who is supposed to be getting the scoop?

Yep...no need to argue guys... If Doc wants to PM me for my address to send a scoop too, and ask what style scoop...then so be it.
If not, no biggie.... I have more things to worry about than that

Like I am almost out of Dr. Pepper..
