Hey everyone. After a few long years of being in storage I've finally started working on our 72 Barracuda. Mainly mechanical stuff, but I'm trying to clean up some messy wiring, etc, from the previous owner. When working under the dash I noticed there appears to be a cable/knob that is missing from right under the dash to the left of the steering wheel that looks similar to the knobs used for opening the air vents. Any idea what this is, I have it circled in red? The knob is missing, it looks like someone yanked on it and broke the end off. Just trying to figure out what I'm missing so it can be replaced.

If it goes out to engine bay, could have been a choke cable. Not unusual for back in the day

That's kind of what I was wondering but most of what I saw said these didn't have manual chokes. I guess someone could've added it. I'll have to trace the line into the engine bay and see where it runs I guess. I'm converting it to EFI anyway so if that's what it is, it can go!

Yup, back in the day I put a choke cable on my 318 when it was converted to a 4 barrel carb.

Good to know, I'm assuming that's what it is then because it doesn't look factory. Thanks fellas! Wish this heat would break here in PA so I could get out there. Too damn hot in the garage right now!

Could also be from one of those aftermarket hood releases.

probably a manual choke cable.

another possibility to think about.
back in the days, in COLD weather climates, a aftermarket fast idle cable was pretty common also. you could start the car. boost the idle with the cable, walk away and you didn't have to hang around until the car warms up to drive it. this way you didn't have to worry about the car stalling after the auto choke opened and the carb released the fast idle. a cable was much cheaper and easier than paying $$$ for a good tune up and repairing the carb on a car that didn't like to idle when cold. after it warmed up it ran just fine.

perception is 90% of reality

Haha same here. I can't stand this humidity. I'm in Mechanicsburg, about 5-10 mins West of Harrisburg. I need to get a mini split setup for my garage. Cool for the summer and not freezing for the winter
